The More, The Merrier

SC

Most Essential Learning Competency: Describe the different modes of

reproduction in flowering and non-flowering plants such as moss, fern, mongo and
others (S5LT-llg-7)

To the Learner
This module was specially designed to help you
understand and apply the lesson objectives. Read and follow
the simple instructions as your guide.
1. Set a conducive learning space at home so you can focus.
2. Seek assistance from your parents or guardian to guide you in doing the
activities.
3. Take down important concepts and list questions you would like to ask from
your teacher.
4. Reflect and apply the concepts learned.
The Writer

Expectations
At the end of the lesson, the learner is expected to:
1. describe the mode of reproduction of a fern, moss mongo or corn; and
2. perform an experiment on seed germination (mongo/corn.)

Looking Back
Unscramble the letters to form words related to plant reproduction. Write the
correct word/s on the space provided.
______________1. D E S E S - a flowering plant's unit of reproduction, capable of
developing into another similar plant
______________2. M A S T E N - the male fertilizing organ of a flower, typically
consisting of a pollen-containing anther and a
filament.
______________3. L I P I T S - the female organs of a flower, comprising the stigma,
style, and ovary.
______________4. R O W F E L - the seed-bearing part of a plant, consisting of
reproductive organs
______________5. P I N O L L A N O I T - the transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule,
flower
or plant to allow fertilization.
Brief Introduction

Plants reproduce in different ways. Reproduction in flowering plants begins with

pollination, the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma on the same flower or to the
stigma of another flower on the same plant (self-pollination) or from the anther on one
plant to the stigma of another plant (cross-pollination). The fertilized ovule develops
into a seed. These plants use seeds to reproduce, or make more plants like them.
Non – flowering plants do not reproduce through flowers but reproduce by means
of releasing large number of spores. These plants rely on wind to carry their

2
reproductive spores as far away as possible. Gymnosperms like conifers produce
seeds instead of spores. The male cones release pollen grains (male sex cells), which
are blown by the wind. If pollen lands on the female cones, it fertilizes the female egg
cells. The fertilized eggs develop into seeds.

Activity 1
DOES IT BLOOM?
Objective: Identify flowering and non – flowering plants
Material: paper, pencil/pen
Procedure:
1. Go to the nearest garden within your vicinity.
2. Observe the plants in that garden and list down plants that are bearing flowers and
those which do not.

3. Ask assistance from your parents or guardian to specify the name of plants

FLOWERING NON – FLOWERING

Guide Questions:
1. Based on your observations, which group of plants is greater in number?
___________________________________________________________________
2. Choose one flowering plant that you listed and describe how does that plant
reproduce? (You may ask assistance from your parents/guardian)
________________________________________________________________
3. Choose one non - flowering plant that you listed and describe how does that plant
reproduce? (You may ask assistance from your parents/guardian)

Activity 2
MANY, MORE, MOSS
Objective: Describe the mode of reproduction of moss
Material: two rocks with moss
Procedure:
1. Prepare two rocks having moss on them.
2. Remove some part of moss on both rocks. Place one rock on a wet area and the
other on a dry place where it has no access on water.
3. Check both stones after several days.

Guide Questions:
1. After several days, which of the two rocks have more moss on it?
____________________________________________________________________

2. What do you think is the reason why that rock have more moss than the other?
____________________________________________________________________
3. Where do you usually see moss?
____________________________________________________________________
4. What is the importance of moist or wet places on the reproduction of moss?
____________________________________________________________________
5. Moss can reproduce just by breaking apart and having their fragments grow. How

could this be useful to cover forests like they do?

Activity 3
BULB - ME LIKE YOU DO!
Objective: Describe the mode of reproduction of an onion
Material: toothpick, onion, water, glass or empty plastic container
Procedure:
1. Get an onion and insert a toothpick near its top. Make sure that the placement of
toothpick will maintain the balance of the onion to avoid from sinking.

34
2. Put the onion with its roots touching the water inside the glass or plastic container.
3. Observe the leaves of the onion for several days.

Guide Questions:
1. What appeared to the onion after a few days?
____________________________________________________________________

2. What do you think is the reason on the sprouting of leaves?

____________________________________________________________________
3. If you plant the onion in a good soil, what do you think will happen?
___________________________________________________________________
4. If you will be doing the same experiment in a garlic, do you think it would give the
same result? Why or why not?
____________________________________________________________________

Activity 4 I’VE BEAN IN A COTTON!

Objective: Perform an experiment on seed germination

Material: mongo seeds, cotton balls, glass container or plastic cup, water and spray
bottle
Procedure:
1. Place some cotton balls in a glass container or plastic cup.
2. Spray some water on the cotton balls.
3. Place the seeds on the cotton balls. Make sure to maintain space between the seeds.
4. Place it in an area where it has access on sunlight and observe it.

5
Day Observations

Guide Questions:
1. Describe the seeds before soaking them.
______________________________________________________________________

2. What happened to the seeds after five days?

______________________________________________________________________

Remember
⮚ Angiosperm is the term used for flowering plants that reproduce through seeds
contained in fruits such as fruits, grains, vegetables and flowers.
⮚ Flowers, which are structures that contain the stamen (male reproductive part)
and pistil (female reproductive part) of an angiosperm allowing the plants to
reproduce through the process called pollination.
⮚ Sexual reproduction in plants involves the fusion of male and female gametes
common for angiosperms or flowering plants.
⮚ Asexual reproduction in non – flowering plants undergoes mode of
reproduction such as fragmentation, budding, spore formation or vegetative
propagation.

6
⮚ Fragmentation is a form of asexual reproduction where a part of the plant can
grow to form a one like mosses.
⮚ Gymnosperms are non – flowering plants that produce seeds to reproduce.
Conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, and gnetophytes are examples of gymnosperm.

Reflection

At present, people are fond of taking care of plants in their garden to keep

themselves busy during this pandemic. This hobby can be a means to generate

income. If you are to have your own garden, what plants are you planning to

grow and how will you make them multiply? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
