Self-Selected Novel Study Packet – Teacher Notes

Studies show that students who are interested in what they read pay closer
attention and comprehend better. In traditional novel studies, children often
end up reading books that have no interest to them, and so they “tune out”.
This packet was created to allow students the “novel study” experience with
books of their own choosing, on subjects that interest them.

Teachers may choose to use all of the provided pieces or pick the ones that
work best for their students. Included in this packet are:
- Before Reading Activities
o Novel Selection Sheet
o Prediction Sheet

- During Reading Activities (every two chapters for up to 20 chapters)

o Vocabulary Selection and Definitions
o Story Map
o Test Question Creation
o Reading Response Writing

- After Reading Activities

o Plot Graph
o Essay Prompts
o Creative Project

These pieces may be put together into one packet or booklet, or handed out
separately and kept in a folder or binder.

All of the work in this packet can be done independently, BUT students will
still need to check in with a teacher regularly (generally 2 – 3 times a week) to
be sure that they on the right track. In the beginning of the novel study,
students may need to check in more regularly than after they have completed
multiple chapters.

Novel Study Packet www.rakisradresources.com ©Raki’s Rad Resources

“Before Reading” Work

These pages should be used before students begin

reading in order to help with novel selection and to
activate prior knowledge.

You may include this in a packet with “during reading”

and “after reading” work OR print it to be handed out
separately.

Be sure to help students choose novels that are

appropriately challenging to them, not too easy where
they won’t find any new, challenging vocabulary or
ideas, or too difficult, where they won’t be able to
understand the vocabulary or content.

“After Reading” Work

These pages should be used after students have

finished reading their self-chosen novel, in order to
help them revise and build on their comprehension.
These will also help them to express their learning to
you, giving you an assessment of if they have
understood what they read.

Use all or some of the pages, as fits the needs of your

students. These pages can be attached to the “during
reading” pages in one packet, or handed out after the
“during pages” are checked.

Each of these assessments should be scored with the

included rubrics.
