Directions: Please read the student’s literature commentary paper. The paper is focused on the thesis statement, which is
the last line of the introduction paragraph. Please help your student locate and correct the items described below.
Do not worry about the content; that is the student’s responsibility. Thank you for your assistance.
_____ 1. The paper is typed: double-spaced, 1” margins, 10-12 Arial or Times New Roman, title in the center, heading
(name, date, number, & [Type of Paper] Final Draft) in top right corner.
_____ 2. Each paragraph is indented, and only one line is skipped between paragraphs.
_____ 3. Each sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point.
_____ 4. Each sentence is complete; each has a subject and predicate and expresses a complete thought.
_____ 8. All frequently confused words are used correctly, such as there/their/they’re, two/to/too, where/were,
already//all ready.

_____ 9. All proper nouns and proper adjectives are capitalized—unnecessary capitalization is avoided.
_____ 10. No words have been accidentally left out or written twice.
_____ 11. Apostrophes are used correctly with contractions and possessive nouns.
_____ 13. Dialogue and quotations are punctuated correctly. (The title of the novel should be in italics or underlined.)
_____ 14. Any correction that could not be rewritten or retyped is crossed out with a single line.
_____ 15. Plagiarism is avoided. The words belong to the writer, or they are in direct quotations and cited. If you are
unsure of plagiarism, ask the student to explain the word or sentence to you.
