Guidelines for the National Level Online Essay Competition

1. PG Department of English, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat is


organising the National Online Essay Writing Competition 2024.
2. The topics for the online essay competition for the year 2024 are
2.1. “Role of Indian English Literature in Viksit Bharat @ 2047”
2.2. “Role of English Language in Viksit Bharat @ 2047”
3. The language of expression is English.
4. Categories of Participants:
4.1. School Level (All the students studying in 8-12 standards)
4.2. Tertiary Level (Students of UG & PG Courses)
4.3. Research Scholars and Faculty Members (Schools, Colleges & Universities of India –
in service/retired)
5. Winners of the competition in each category will be awarded cash prizes as follows:
• First prize: ₹ 5,000
• Second prize: ₹ 3,000
• Third prize: ₹ 2,000
6. There are no charges/registration fees for participation in the competition.

7. Eligibility:
7.1. The participant must be a citizen of India
7.2. The online essay writing competition is open to all persons who are/were associated with
academia (students - currently studying in schools, colleges and universities in India and
faculty members - in-service or retired).
7.3. Only one entry per topic, per participant will be considered. In case, it is discovered that a
participant has submitted more than one entry, all the entries from the participant will be
disqualified.
7.4. Language and presentation:
7.4.1. The essay must be written in English.
7.4.2. The length of the essay should be 1500 to 2000 words.
7.4.3. The essay must be typed in an A-4 size MS Word document using Times New
Roman having size 12 with 1.5 spacing.
7.4.4. The essay should reflect original thinking and presentation. Plagiarism or non-
conformity to the guidelines will lead to disqualification of the participant. The
Department of English shall not bear any responsibility for copyright
violations or infringements of intellectual property carried out by the
participants.
7.5. Period of submission:
7.5.1. Essays are to be shared via the Google form link
(https://forms.gle/8Euu3Ax22FDtQRSN9 ) by 5:00 pm on 5 February 2024.
Entries received beyond this period will not be considered.
7.6. Submission Guidelines:

7.6.2. Second Page
• Title of the Essay: Times New Roman, Font size 14, Bold
• Content: Font Size 12, Normal
7.6.3. Formatting Style
• Font Type: Times New Roman.
• Headings Font Size 14, Bold.
• Content: Font Size 12, Normal.
• Alignment: Justified
• Line spacing: 1.5
• Margins: Normal.
• Style of citation: MLA 9th Edition, Line Spacing 1.15

7.7. Evaluation criteria:
7.7.1. The criteria for the evaluation of essays will be:
• Originality of ideas and depth of knowledge
• Relevance to the theme
• Clarity of expression and language
• Structure and organization
• Adherence to the word limit
7.8. Evaluation of entries:
7.8.1. The best three essays in each category will be awarded prizes as subject to the
conditions mentioned in the guidelines.
7.8.2. The decision of the evaluation committee will be final and binding on all the
participants.
7.9. Declaration of result:
7.9.1. Results will be published on the English Department page of the
University website https://www.spuvvn.edu/academics/departments/english/ by 5
March 2024.
7.10. Prizes for winners:
7.10.1. The prizes will be awarded at the Annual Day Celebration. Details will be sent
to the prize winners separately. No TA will be provided.
7.10.2. Competition prize winners will be notified of the competition result by e-mail.
Reasonable efforts will be made to contact the prize winner for 3 days; if the
winner fails to respond to our notification attempts within this time, the prize
will be offered to the next eligible participant.
7.10.3. All participants, who submit eligible entries that follow the guidelines of the
competition, shall receive participation certificates in digital format.
7.11. General:
7.11.1. If an entry is found to violate the guidelines, it will be removed from the
evaluation process without giving any intimation or explanation to the
participant.
7.11.2. The chosen competition entries might be featured in a book, if needed in an
edited format.
7.11.3. We might engage in promotional activities related to the competition and prize
distribution. Winners must consent to the use of their name, photograph, and
disclosure of their region of residence in any promotional activities that occur
after winning the prize.
7.11.4. Any dispute or any issue related to this competition shall be decided by the
Department of English which will be final and binding.
7.11.5. The organiser reserves the right to cancel or amend all or any part of the
competition/or the guidelines/evaluation criteria etc. at any time without any
