This study aimed to identify the health needs of the community in Barangay Mauway,
Mandaluyong. However, the data obtained were limited, restricting the group from making a
comprehensive assessment of the community's needs. Regardless of this limitation, 22 families
(106 family members) were interviewed to supplement the provided data, enabling the group to
determine the health status of the community and appropriate interventions for its members.
B. Demographic Indices
1. Total of Families: 22
2. Total Population: 106
Table 1. Percentage Distribution of Age and Sex, Purok II, Nueve De Pebrero Mauway,
Mandaluyong City as of March 2023
1. Sex Ratio = Total of number of Males/Total number of Females x 100
112:100
In Purok 2 Nueve De Pebrero Mauway, Mandaluyong City, there are 22 households with
a total of 106 people who need to be studied for a community diagnosis. There were a total of 56
men and 50 women residing in the said city. The ratio of males to females was found by dividing
the number of males by the number of females and then multiplying that number by 100. The
result was 112, which indicates that there are 112 males for every 100 females.
The gender ratio revealed that there are more men than women in Purok 2 and Mauway
Mandaluyong City. According to the World Health Organization, there are roughly 105 men for
every 100 women, which is the natural or anticipated sex ratio. This is especially clear in
Southeast Asia, where the number of males and females born is not the same. In all countries,
there are more male than female births (Ritchie & Roser, 2019). As a result of this difference
between mortality and life expectancy rates in both sexes, it is anticipated that women will live
longer than men and will constitute slightly more than half of the population.
A big difference in the number of men and women in society could lead to problems like
conflict and violence between men and women. According to Neupert-Wentz (2020), the
difference in the number of men and women will make it hard for men to meet social and
economic goals like finding a partner and having children. In addition, males may take more
risks, which can lead to a higher death rate.
A difference in the number of men and women in society could lead to problems like
conflict and violence between males and females. Neupert-Wentz (2020) writes that if there
aren't as many men as women, men won't be able to follow social norms like finding a partner
and having children or reaching their economic goals. In addition to this, the males might engage
in riskier behavior, which might increase mortality.
Based on the information collected, the age groups of the population are definitely
different. The largest group is the adult population ranging from ages 20–39, which consists of
49 people, specifically 29 males and 20 females, making up 46.3 percent of the population.
Among this adult group, the largest number of members of the community range from 25–29
years old, which is considered adult. The population of
35.1 is considered the second largest group, ranging from 0-19 years, which is the youth
group. The total population of 37 people consists of 18 males and 19 females, and the largest
members of the community range from 0-4 years, which is the preschooler group. The third
largest group are middle- aged adults, ranging from ages 40 to 59. They consist of 7 males and 9
females, making up 15.1% of the entire population. Moreover, the least amount was found in the
older adult group, ranging from ages 60 to 74, consisting of 2 males and 2 females, making up
only 3.8% of the population.
The gathered data indicates that most of the community of Purok 2 Mauway,
Mandaluyong City, comprises adults due to the fact that most of the families have 1 or more
children or offspring in their household. This is where appropriate family planning must take
place to ensure that the offspring are provided with their basic essential needs as well as to lessen
the chances of unwanted pregnancies occurring.
Another noticeable trend in the data is how there are fewer older adults in the population,
which possibly indicates a high mortality rate among these age groups. According to Stanford
Medicine (2019), the major cause of death in the 55–64 age group is cancer, followed by heart
disease and injury. In the
75+ age group, the leading cause shifts to heart disease, and injury drops below chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cerebrovascular diseases, and pneumonia. It is also
noticeable from the given data that the number of males decreases as age increases. An article by
Ospina and Beltekian
(2018) states that women have a higher life expectancy than men due to a variety of factors. It
may be due to genetics since men are said to have more visceral fat, which may potentially lead
to cardiovascular diseases. It may also be since smoking habits and excessive alcohol intake are
more common in men than in women.
Those in charge must do what needs to be done to make sure that the community is well-
balanced and moving forward. This is where the implementation of programs dedicated to
educating the population regarding appropriate measures to be taken, such as family planning
and disease prevention, takes place.
The community must utilize the data obtained to plan ahead and prevent unfavorable
occurrences from happening.
Figure 1. Population Pyramid of Age and Sex, at Purok 2, Nueve De Pebrero Mauway,
Mandaluyong City as of March, 2023
Analysis:
Figure 1 shows a population pyramid with different age groups. This shows that the
population is diverse. It is clearly seen in the graph that the total number of males is higher than
that of females, which is also noticeable in the sex ratio. The length of the bars in the adult age
group shows how much better their numbers are than those of the oldest adult with the least.
It is also seen that there is a decrease in the male population as age increases. In the 70–
74 age group, it's also interesting that only the female side has a bar with 0.9% of the population
on it. The population pyramid shows that men in the community can't live to be 75 or older. This
could mean that there are a lot of deaths among people in those ages.
4. Civil Status
Figure 2. Pie Chart of Civil Status, at Purok 2, Nueve De Pebrero Mauway, Mandaluyong
City as of March 2023
Most of the people in the sample were single since it consisted of adolescents ranging in
age from 15 to 17 years old, with the legal age of marriage in the Philippines being 18 years old.
Adolescents of this age make up most of the population, based on the data collected.
C. Socio-Cultural Indices
1. Educational Attainment
= 81/81 x 100
= 100%
The total population of the community who are aged 7 years old and above is 81.
In terms of educational level, 31 of them (38.1%) have reached junior high school, 2 (3%)
have reached senior high school, 16 (20.0%) are elementary graduates, 8 (9.5%) have
graduated college, 1 (1%) have finished a vocational program, 7 (8.6%) are college
undergraduates, 5 (6.5%) are still in preschool, and 11 (13.3%) have no formal education.
The maximum level of education a person can achieve is called educational attainment. It
is frequently impacted by a number of variables, including financial assistance, housing
arrangements, geography, physical and mental health, and other environmental factors. The
economic standing of each family, including the number of dependents, their occupation, and
their monthly income, has a significant impact on educational attainment in this community.
Based on the data gathered, the majority of the population only finished junior high school,
nowadays, proper job opportunities require a certain level of education which is senior high
school graduate. Education and poverty are intrinsically intertwined. Although not all
uneducated people live in abject poverty, the majority of adults in poverty lack a minimum
education. Because they must work, poor people quit attending school, leaving them without the
literacy and numeracy abilities necessary to change their position (Alip, 2022). Their children are
also more likely to drop out of school due to their limited resources and income, which feeds a
cycle of poverty that lasts for generations (Alip, 2022). This is regrettable because education's
most significant impact on poverty is its potential to eradicate it. All of these factors contribute to
being able to access education.
The community has a 100% literacy rate, which means all of the population aged 7 years
old and above have the ability to read and write. Lacking basic reading and writing skills is a
tremendous disadvantage. Literacy not only enriches an individual’s life, but it creates
opportunities for people to develop skills that will help them provide for themselves and their
family (Plan International, 2017). In fact, adults’ employability and incomes are negatively
impacted by low literacy. Income disparity is aggravated by the growing "skills gap." Compared
to adults with higher levels of education, adults without a high school diploma are more than
twice as likely to be unemployed, work in low-paying occupations, live in poverty, and rely on
government assistance programs (Bellso, 2016).
2. Religion
The total number of fathers and mothers in the community is 22. In terms of
religion, 18 people (82%) are Catholic, and other religions got only 1 (4.5% each).
These gathered data from the community are supported by the fact that most Filipinos are
Roman Catholics. The Philippines stands out among its neighbors in South East Asia in that the
vast majority of its citizens (92.5%) identify as Christians. To be more precise, 82.9% of people
identify as Catholics, 2.8% as Evangelical Christians, 2.3% as Iglesia ni Kristo, and 4.5% as
members of other Christian denominations (Scroope, 2017). 5.0% of the remaining population
identify as Muslims, 1.8% as followers of another religion, 0.6% as unidentified, and 0.1% as
having no religious affiliation (Scroope, 2017). The denomination of Christianity that became most
embedded in Filipino culture is Catholicism, which was introduced in the Philippines during the
early colonial period by the Spanish (Scroope, 2017).
Religion, medicine, and health care are all intertwined historically. In the fourth
century, religious organizations constructed the first hospitals for people who couldn't
afford to pay for private healthcare (Ladrido-Ignacio, 2022). Religious organizations also
acquired control of doctor education and medical license issuance at this time. This was
the case up until the seventeenth century, when technical development brought about a
shift (Ladrido-Ignacio, 2022). Medical treatment is becoming more frequently based on
scientific data (Ladrido-Ignacio, 2022). From a compassionate, service-oriented style of
medicine to a technology, cure-oriented model, the emphasis has shifted. Religion
strengthens not only an individual but also families, communities, and society as a whole
by having a big impact on a lot of different things like marriage, careers, mental health,
personal problems, and societal issues.
3. Place of Origin
Out of the total number of fathers and mothers in the community, which is 22, 11
people (48.6%) originated from National Capital Region (NCR), 7 (31.4%) from Luzon
(outside NCR), 3 (14.3%) from Visayas, and 1 (5.7%) from Mindanao.
Since the gathered data is from a community located in NCR, most of the
population group is from within and nearby Mandaluyong. According to Commision on
Audit (COA) the city of Mandaluyong was converted into a Highly Urbanized City under
Republic Act (RA) No. 7675, otherwise known as "The Charter of the City of
Mandaluyong" signed by President Fidel V. Ramos on February 9, 1994. On April 10,
1994, a plebiscite confirmed the conversion of Mandaluyong from a municipality to a
highly urbanized city. It explains why only few of the population is from outside NCR.
Based on the survey from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in 2018 for internal
migration that involved crossing regional boundaries, the five regions with the largest
number of out-migrants are NCR, CALABARZON, Central Luzon, Bicol, and Northern
Mindanao while the regions with the largest number of in-migrants are NCR. Furthermore,
internal migration is mainly driven by employment, the reason cited by 46% of the
migrants for their first-ever internal move, and by 23%, for their last internal move in the
past five years (PSA, 2019). The top five reasons for internal move are the following:
employment reasons, housing-related reason, school, to live with parents, and to live with
partners (PSA, 2019)
D. Economic Indices

Figure 6. Pie Chart of Dependency Ratio of Families with Past Illnesses without
Medical Attendance, at Purok II, Brgy. Mauway, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila as of
March, 2023
The group of people classified as dependents includes those who are 0–14 years
old and 65 years of age or more, whereas the independents category includes those who
are 15–64 years old. It is recommended that there be 7 dependents for every 100
independents.
Figure 7. Pie Chart of Source of Income of Families with Past Illnesses without
Medical Attendance, at Purok II, Brgy. Mauway, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila as of
March, 2023
People who are employed work for certain individuals or firms, people who are self-
employed run their own business, and people who are unemployed or in school have no other
source of income.
Since these 73 independents are the ones who are responsible for supporting the
dependents in their community, they should be able to support the 33 dependents, but because 29
of the 73 independents are unemployed or still in school, it may put additional strain on the 44
who are employed to support the dependents and the 29 independents, which may result in a lack
of resources.
3. Occupation
White collar workers are those who spend most of their time at desks, and blue collar
workers are those who perform manual labor as their primary duty. All 44 of those employed are
thought to have both blue collar and white collar jobs.
In contrast to a rate of only 4.5 per 100 for white-collar workers and 6.7 for service
workers, the CDC reports that "the work injury rate for blue-collar workers was 26.8 persons
injured for every 100 currently employed persons." Since blue collar workers make up the bulk of
the population, they are more prone to occupational injuries as a result of their line of work.
4. Monthly Income
A family of five in the Philippines need a monthly income of PhP 12,030 in order to be
considered to be over the poverty line, according to the PSA. A family of five is thought to require
at least PhP 8,379 per month to cover their basic dietary requirements. With this known, there are
currently 21 individuals who receive below 12,000 monthly income

In regards to the educational attainment of the people in the community, the greatest
percentage of the population completed junior high school with a total of 31 (38.1%) individuals.
While 16 individuals (20%) completed elementary, 11 (13.3%) individuals have no formal
education, 8 (9.5%) individuals are college graduates, 7 (8.6%) individuals are college
undergraduates, 5 (6.5%) individuals are currently in preschool, 2 (3%) individuals completed
senior high school and to complete the population, 1 (1%) individual completed the vocational
course. The community has a 100% literacy rate, meaning that everyone who is 7 years old or
older can read and write. One way to end poverty is to become educated, which offers several
advantages. It supports gender equality, democracy, and peace while fostering lifelong learning,
developing skills and self-esteem, enhancing the economy and quality of life, and creating
employment and opportunities (Giovetti, 2020).
In terms of religion, 22 persons (100%) are Roman Catholic,1 (4.5%) individual is Iglesia
Ni Cristo, 1 (4.5%) individual is Seventh-day Adventist, 1 (4.5%) individual is Born Again and
lastly, 1 (4.5) individual is a Baptist. The majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholics, which gives
credibility to the facts collected from the community. There are around 76 million (81%)
Catholics in the nation, according to the Catholic Global Mission (2022). The Philippines came
in third place among the nations with the highest percentage of Catholics. The Spanish
colonizers introduced Catholicism to the Philippines, where it has persisted ever since.
With regards to the dependency ratio, of the 106 residents of the community, 73 (68.9%)
are between the ages of 15 and 64, 32 (30.2%) are between the ages of 0 and 14, and just one
(0.9%) is 65 or older. The community has 33 dependents on its employed members, which is a
suitable number, but only 73 independents, indicating that the independents will have more labor
to complete as a result of the community's lack of independents. As to the source of income, of
the 73 people aged 15 years old to 64 years old living in the community, 42 (57.53%) are
employed, 29 (39.73%) are unemployed or studying while 2 (1.89%) are self-employed.
Individuals who are employed or self-employed work for specific persons or businesses, whereas
those who are unemployed or enrolled in school have no other financial resources. Since these 73
independents are the ones who are responsible for supporting the dependents in their community,
they should be able to support the 33 dependents, but because 29 of the 73 independents are
unemployed or still in school, it may put additional stress on the 44 who are employed to support
the dependents and the 29 independents, which may lead to lack of resources. As regards
occupation, 17 (38.64%) individuals of the population who are working in the community have
white-collar jobs. The most significant percentage making up 61.63% of the population have
blue-collar jobs which consist of 27 individuals. A high percentage of blue-collar workers could
indicate susceptibility to work-related injuries. As for the monthly income, of the 44 residents of
the neighborhood who are employed, 9 (20.45%) earn between PHP 10,001 and 15,000, 7
(15.91%) less than PHP 5,000, 14 (31.82%) between PHP 5,001 and 10,000, and 10 (22.72%)
between PHP 15,001 and 20,000. Two (4.55%) make between PHP 20,000 and PHP 25,000, and
two (4.55%) earn between PHP 25,000 and PHP 30,000 each.
In relation to past illnesses, the most reported case was Respiratory Tract Disorders, with
a reported case of 15 (57.7%), the next reported case was Hypertension with a total of 2 (7.7%)
cases. Overcrowding and inadequate ventilation in each home could contribute to an increase in
respiratory tract disorders. Other diseases, including breast cancer, preeclampsia, covid,
tonsillitis, dengue, heart disease, diabetes, appendicitis, and arthritis each had 1 (3.8%) reported
case. As of present illnesses, there have been 3 illnesses recorded in Purok II, Brgy. The same
number of instances (33.3%) were recorded for Mauway, renal disease, myocardial infarction,
and uric acid combined. As of this year, no widespread illnesses have been discovered in the
community.
