This document provides guidance on designing hot water storage and distribution systems. It outlines key inputs to consider like occupancy levels and hot water usage patterns. It also lists essential design outputs such as schematics of the storage vessel system and sizing calculations. Important design checks are identified like ensuring the storage vessel and piping are correctly sized to meet demand and comply with relevant regulations.

Design inputs Notes / Design file cross-reference
• Number of occupants, and the split between permanent and transitory occupancy • Period and hours of occupation and pattern of hot water use • The client’s requirement for hot water storage
• Schematics showing the installation of hot water storage vessel(s) showing connections and outlets • Schedule of hot water storage vessel sizes, capacity, recovery period, primary heat source, working pressures (primary and secondary), whether vented or un-vented, and weights at full capacity • Hot water distribution network • Control requirements • Requirement for backflow prevention • See Design Outputs for Legionnaires’ Disease – Hot Water Services • Assessment of primary heat-source loads, including whether gas or electric
• Check that the hot water storage vessel system is correctly sized • Check that the supply and return pipes are correctly sized • Systems have to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, the Water Bylaws 2000 Scotland and the associated Water Regulations Guide • Systems should be designed in accordance with BS 6700 and BS EN 806-2 • Design in accordance with HSC ACOP L8 – See Legionnaires’ Disease – Hot Water Services
