Design inputs Notes / Design file cross-reference

• Cold water demand and patterns of use

• Likely maximum interruption of mains water supply

• Criticality of water supply

• Results of legionella risk assessment

• Options for water treatment, such as ionisation,
iodine and chlorine dioxide

Design outputs Notes / Design file cross-reference

• Insulation requirements for cold water pipework

• Requirements for additional water treatment

• Specification of fittings and materials

• Design of system branches

• See Design Outputs for Cold Water Storage and
Distribution

Key design checks Notes / Design file cross-reference

• Avoid tepid water conditions (Storage/distribution
temperatures in the range 20 – 45oC will support
significant colonies of bacteria.)
• Design in accordance with HSC ACOP L8 – The control
of legionella bacteria in water systems and CIBSE TM 13
– Minimising the risk of legionnaires’ disease
• Systems have to comply with the Water Supply
(Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and the Water
Byelaws 2000, Scotland
• Systems should be designed in accordance with
BS 6700 and BS EN 806-2
