General Sanitary Design Approach and Methodology for design

of Bahirdar university G+6 Science Complex Building

INTRODUCTION
The overall design is sub divided into internal and site work sanitary designs. The former is
the plumbing service design to all fixtures, waste water disposal and rain water design
management (i.e. design of gutter and down pipes). The latter shall dictate supplying of water
from the central system, guiding sewage from the building to the nearby central waste
management and draining storm water from the building to the existing storm line.

i. Project Objective:
Objective of the service is to provide a complete detailed Design, Bill of Quantities, and
Design Report documents. In proposing; Plumbing service system and Fire Protection work of
the Building and external utility works of the project.
This service contract outlines the System design services under the following major
assignments:
 Plumbing services design
o Domestic water supply and hot water return system if necessary
o Waste water drainage system and venting design
o Rain water and sub-surface drainage system design
o Storm water drainage design
o Waste water disposal and treatment unit design
o Laboratory Waste water disposal
o Laboratory Gas supply system
 Fire protection design
 Preparation of technical specification and bill of quantities
ii. Work Plan and Methodology

In order to accomplish these assignments, the consultant is determined to use most

recent local & international code of standards, best techniques of study & design
methodologies. For an efficient and proper execution of the project; the work program is
prepared by grouping the overall project activities into different stages. Some of the major
activities to be carried out are:-

 Data acquisition, analysis and interpretation:

 Gathering of information from Bahirdar University: (obtaining utility map and

drawings showing all of the adjacent utilities to the site and/or in nearby & around
the project site). Such as: -
o Water mains information: type, diameter, flow, static & residual pressures of
nearby line
o Sewer and storm line information; type, diameter and invert level of the
main nearby sewer line.
 Examine the availability of adequate and suitable space to locate the external
system utilities such as (Water supply & pumping components, Plumbing waste
disposal & treatment facilities, Storm drainage disposal facilities…)
 This activity will include collection of data, information and document from client
and other concerned organization. Method of collection includes:
o Site visit (visual inspection)
o Interviewing stakeholders
 Study the Topographical & Geological aspects of the project site which are peculiar
for economical routing of utility piping alignments, and recommending the
appropriate type of on-site waste water disposal system. The system to be visited
and assessed includes but not limited to:
o Water supply systems (tanks, reservoirs) networks if any.
o Waste water systems (collection, disposal and treatment system it includes
buried pipes, networks, appurtenances, treatment units etc. if any.
o Storm water drainage systems (includes open and closed drains,
appurtenances, final disposals etc.) if any.
 Data analysis and interpret to standardize the design criteria’s…
 Design work:
 Providing design reviews on Architectural design layouts to ascertain accessibility,
functionality and standardization requirements.
 Carry-out Coherence Juries along with the Architect on the preliminary Architectural
design layouts.
 Utility coordination with other design team members of the consultant
(Civil/Structural, Mechanical &Electrical Engineers, Architect) to implement a
coordinated utility layout design.
 Preparation of preliminary & final design system services. The design will be made
based on short, medium- and long-term demands. The system selection and detail
engineering design include but not limited to:
o Design of alternative pipe network layout and selection of the best routes
o Hydraulics calculations and pipe sizing
o Design of capacity sizing of pumps
o Design of firefighting system
o Design of appurtenance structures (manholes, valve boxes, catch pits, etc..)
o Design of ancillary buildings (pump and Generator House)
o Preparations of drawings to the standards
All designs will be aided by appropriate design software like AUTOCAD…

 Report writing & Document preparations:

 The Reports, plan drawings, design calculations & hydraulic analysis, and documents
will be submitted in draft and/or final form; according to the requested details by
the consultant.
 Finally, preparation of specification, bill of quantities and engineer cost estimate for
all items designed winds up the design and detailed design report will be prepared
accordingly.
Detailed Engineering Design of Water Supply System

This activity starts with suppling a water supply system to roof mounted tank
from the existing main
The established design criteria, functional and hydraulic parameters will be fully
considered in conjunction with the economic aspects. The necessary assumption
based on the local condition will made.

Detailed Engineering Design of Waste Water Drainage System

This activity starts from the building waste water generation areas either using
the fixtures unit ratings or using the population residing in the building. The
generated waste water from the building will be quantified and qualitatively sorted so
that sewers network sizing and final treatment types selected accordingly.
Following the quantifying and sorting the type of the waste generated the hydraulic
design of pipes/sewers- main and laterals continues, with subsequent appurtenances
like manholes, flushing, sumps with pump if necessary, drop manholes, distributions,
and intermediate treatments like oil separator for kitchen, wastes dilution pits for
corrosive wastes, screenings for bigger size wastes,

Detailed Storm Water Drainage System

The activity mainly starts from closely scrutinizing the project area topography,
hydrology and climate pattern following by selecting proper formula for determining
the run off contributing to each drain. The run off calculated and estimated will be
used to size and determine the drains whether closed or open. In the layout and
network, the proper appurtenances like covered channels, catch pits, street in lets,
spouts, manholes, stilling basins, drops, outlets structures will be also designed. In the
design an appropriate final runoff disposal is also designed and determined
considering environmental parameter.
