1 ‫متن‬
The inventors of the first airplane were not scientists. In fact, they didn’t even finish high
school. They were just two ordinary brothers with a big dream, the dream of flying. Orville
and Wilbur Wright grew up in Indiana in a large family. Instead of sitting in class and reading,
they wanted to work and make different things like machines. When the brothers were 18 and
22 years old, they started up their own bicycle shop in 1899.
One day, Wilbur read an interesting story in a newspaper about a man that tried to fly by
means of a glider. The man died, but the story gave Wilbur an idea. He decided to teach
himself about flying in order to make a better glider. Together, Orville and Wilbur
successfully tested their new glider on a rocky beach. Then the brothers decided to turn their
glider into a flying machine. They put an engine on the glider and called their new machine
the “Wright Flyer.” The plane broke down on its first test, but the Wright brothers didn’t give
up. With a little more hard work, the Wright Flyer made a successful flight. On December 17,
1903, the Wright brothers made history by flying the Wright Flyer over a beach in Carolina.

2 ‫متن‬
Skin is an organ which you may not think about much, but it’s very important. It protects and
covers other organs and holds them together. It also defends your body from harm, and gives
you the sense of touch. The human skin is made up of three layers. Let’s take a look at each
layer.
The first layer is the part of the skin that you can see. It’s thin in some places (like your
eyelids) but thicker in other places (like the bottom of your feet). It is this layer of skin that
makes new skin cells, gives skin its color, and protects your body.
The second layer is under the first layer. Nerve endings and blood vessels are in this layer.
Nerve endings send messages to the brain about what you touch and feel. For example, your
nerve endings may tell the brain that something feels hot, and then the brain uses this
information and sends a message telling you to move your hand. The small blood vessels in
this layer bring oxygen to your skin cells to keep them alive and healthy. They also collect
and take away waste from the skin cells.

97. What’s the main idea of the passage?

1) The cells that give skin its color 2) Skin and its different layers
3) The skin cells help us stay healthy 4) How the brain sends messages
98. Which of the following is NOT among the roles of skin, according to the passage?
1) Making new skin cells 2) Sending messages to the brain
3) Protecting other organs of the body 4) Moving different parts of the body
99. We understand from the passage that the underlined word “waste” in paragraph 3 is
anything that ---------.
1) is not useful anymore 2) pumps blood around the body
3) is in the second layer of skin 4) brings oxygen to your skin cells
100. In paragraph 4, the writer will probably talk about ------------------.
1) another organ of the body
2) the first layer and how it gives skin its color
3) the brain and how it controls your body
4) the other layer of skin and its roles

3 ‫متن‬
The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It is the most famous
wall and is a very popular tourist attraction in China. In fact, it wasn’t at first one long
continuous wall. It began as different walls when the Chinese first built it, and didn’t become
the “Great Wall” until Emperor Qin Shi Huang joined the walls together to protect the
northern cities from enemy attacks. It is about 21,196 kilometers long, 9.1 meters wide and
15 meters high. Millions of people worked on it for more than 1000 years. Some scientists
believe that up to 1 million people died while building the wall. Many of these people were
just buried under the wall when they died.
One of the wrong beliefs about the Great Wall of China is that people can see it from the
moon with the naked eye and without a telescope. Neil Armstrong, the first man who landed
on the moon, said that this was not true. It would be more acceptable to say that we can see
the Great Wall from a low orbit of the earth. However, this is not unique to the Great Wall as
many other man-made buildings can be seen from that height too.
93. What is the best title for the passage?
1) The Greatest Wonder of the World
2) How the Chinese Protect Their Cities
3) The Most Famous Wall in the World

1) It was first built as a single wall to protect cities.
2) It took about one hundred years to complete.
3) You can see it from the moon without a telescope.
4) Some say many workers lost their lives while building it.
95. According to the passage, the Chinese built the Great Wall mainly to ------------.
1) defend themselves against their enemies
2) have a popular tourist attraction
3) help them attack other countries
4) join the northern cities together
96. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
1) The Great Wall of China
2) Seeing the Great Wall from the moon
3) Landing on the moon for the first time
4) The belief about other man-made buildings

4 ‫متن‬
There are deserts all over the world. You can find them in Africa, China, and North America.
In a few special places, deserts are growing. This is a serious problem because deserts destroy
the land where plants and animals live. When people cannot grow food or find anything to
eat, they have to leave their homes.
Sometimes, nature can cause deserts to spread. Wind can move sand away from deserts
and onto useful land. Also when there is no rain for a long time, plants die and deserts grow.
Humans can also cause deserts to grow. This is called desertification, and it happens in many
ways. One way is when people cause too much air pollution, which can make an area hotter
and decrease the amount of rain. Another way is when humans cut down too many trees. Trees
help to hold water in the ground. So, it’s no wonder that less water stays in the ground and
deserts grow more easily when people cut trees down. Having many animals can destroy the
land as well. When large animals like cows walk on soil too much, they turn it into dust. Then
the wind can blow this dust away.
97. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
1) Why humans cause deserts to grow
2) The role of nature in desertification
3) How deserts become bigger
4) Stopping deserts from growing
98. Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?
1) All desserts are growing all over the world.
2) When there is enough rain, deserts cannot grow.
3) Humans are not the only cause of desert growth.
4) Wind plays a key role in making deserts bigger.
99. The underlined word “spread” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to -------------.
1) invent 2) increase 3) collect 4) carry
100. We can understand from the passage that one way to stop deserts from growing is ------.
1) to make the weather hotter 2) to use too much water
3) to plant more trees 4) to have many animals

5 ‫متن‬
In the rainforests of Southeast and South Asia, there are five types of snakes that fly! Yes,
flying snakes are very real. They move from tree to tree mostly by flying. They flatten out
their bodies and use the speed of free fall to move in the air from high spots to lower spots.
Sometimes they land on people. They’re not deadly to humans. In fact, they’re classified as
harmless unless you’re allergic to them or you’re one of their preferred foods like lizards,
birds, bats, and frogs.
Flying snakes grow to be 90 to 120 centimeters long, but smaller ones are better flyers.
Using video cameras to study the flight paths of one tree snake, scientists found that on its
best trip it can land 20 meters away from the base of that tree!
Scientists don’t know how often or exactly why flying snakes fly, but it’s likely they fly to
escape hunters or to move from tree to tree without having to go down to the forest floor, and
possibly even to hunt.

Whales are the largest animals that have ever lived on earth. They are even bigger than the
largest dinosaur and it is believed that millions of years ago, whales probably walked upon
land. Whales feed milk to their babies and breathe air. They are not fish, so they cannot
breathe underwater. They must come up to the surface of the water.
Almost everything about whales is massive. Its tongue weighs as much as an elephant, its
heart is the size of a car and its blood vessels are so wide you could swim through them! When
whales sleep, they stay on the top of the water. Scientists believe that whales can live a
maximum of 35 years. They can tell the age of a whale by looking at a whale’s tooth. Whales
are very noisy and the sounds they make can travel great distances. These sounds are called
“Whale Song.” Whales are the loudest animals in the world.

White blood cells are a big part of the immune system. They kill germs like bacteria and
viruses. White blood cells also help to fight other harmful things. They find where the germs
are and start to destroy them. White blood cells go out of the blood in places where there is
an infection.
Another name for a white blood cell is leukocyte. Leuko means white, cyte means cell.
There are three main kinds of white blood cells. The different white blood cells work in
different ways. Some of them kill and eat germs. Some make antibodies to help other white
blood cells find and kill germs. The others find and attack things that are not a part of our
body.
When a germ makes someone sick, the body shows it. The body gets red, hot, and painful.

8 ‫متن‬
Rivers are always very important for human life. Even today, most of our drinking water
comes from rivers. But rivers carry more than water. They make soil good for growing food.
Until 12,000 years ago, humans were nomads. It means that we travelled around from place
to place, hunting animals and gathering plants. But our growing relationship with rivers made
us change the way we lived.
It was in the rich riverside lands of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China that ancient
people first began to farm the land and grow crops. When we grew enough food and no longer
had to travel to find it, we could build homes and human civilization truly began. We built
the first cities in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and along the Nile
River in Egypt. The natural flooding of the rivers provided the soil and water needed for
growing crops, but it could also destroy anything in the neighborhood. Ancient people had to
be careful because their houses were near rivers.

97. What is the best title for the passage?

3) The Story of the Nile River 4) Humans Won’t Live without Rivers
98. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
1) All our drinking water comes from rivers.
2) Humans were nomads before they started to farm the land.
3) The natural flooding of the rivers destroyed most of the ancient cities.
4) Humans started to travel around from place to place when they built the first cities.
99. It can be understood from the passage that ---------------- .
1) humans started hunting animals and gathering plants12,000 years ago
2) floodwaters always destroyed houses in ancient cities
3) people living in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China were rich
