WHILE-LISTENING SECTION
A. CONVERSATIONS (TRACK 1)
For items 1 to 3, you will listen to three conversations. As you listen, mark the choice that best answers each
question. Before you listen to each conversation, you will have 15 seconds to have a look at the question
and the three alternatives.
Speaker A : Item 1. Have a look at the question and the three alternatives. (***pause 15 seconds)
Man : I don’t think I’ll be able to finish tomorrow’s Greek Mythology assignment on time.
Woman : I hear some senior students are selling their old assignments for a reasonable price, but I think
you should ask the professor for an extension. She can give you extra time if you have a good
excuse and if you’re a good student in general. You know, she’ll go crazy if she finds out that you
cheated.
(***pause 10 seconds)

Speaker A : Item 2. Have a look at the question and the three alternatives. (***pause 15 seconds)
Woman : Hey, it’s 4:30. Why aren’t you at your doctor’s appointment?
Man : I had to attend a last-minute meeting at 4 o’clock, so I called the doctor’s office, and her assistant
told me that the doctor would be there until 6. She’ll see me half an hour before that.
(***pause 10 seconds)

Speaker A : Item 3. Have a look at the question and the three alternatives. (***pause 15 seconds)
Woman : George, could you translate a sixteen-page document from Spanish to English for me? I’ll pay for
it of course, but it’s really urgent. I need it by Friday.
George : I’d love to, and I would give you a nice discount as you’re a close friend. But unfortunately, I
can’t. I have no extra time this week. I work overtime and feel really tired when I get home. If you
had more time, I could do it over the weekend.
(***pause 10 seconds)
B. INTERVIEW (TRACK 2)
For the items in this section, you will hear an interview about the changing eating habits in the developed
world. You will hear the interview only ONCE. As you listen, mark the choice that best answers each
question or completes each statement. Before you listen to the interview, you will have 45 seconds to have
a look at the questions and the alternatives.
Interviewer: Hi, I'm here today with Sharon Palmer, a dietician, to talk about the changing eating habits of
people in the developed world. Hello Sharon, and welcome to our show.
Sharon: Thank you for inviting me.
Interviewer: Can you tell us a bit about what you've observed in your work?
Sharon: Sure, I've been a dietician for several years now and I've definitely seen some changes in the way
people are eating.
Interviewer: Can you give some examples?
Sharon: One big change is the increase in popularity of plant-based diets. Many people are choosing to eat
more vegetables, fruits, and other plant-based organic foods. They are also reducing their consumption of
meat and dairy products – although organic-labeled products are often more expensive.
Interviewer: Why do you think this is happening?
Sharon: There are many reasons. Some people are motivated by the potential health benefits of a plant-based
diet. Others prefer it due to environmental concerns, as the production of meat and dairy products has
negative effects on the planet. Plant-based food is definitely an eco-friendly alternative to animal products.
Still others are motivated by ethical concerns, such as the treatment of animals in the food industry.
Interviewer: That's interesting. Are there any other changes you've observed in eating habits?
Sharon: Yes, there's also been a rise in the popularity of convenience foods. Convenience foods are foods that
are ready-to-eat or easy to prepare. However, they contain a lot of fat and sodium, so they are not the most
nutritious option. Examples of convenience foods include pre-packaged snacks, frozen meals, and canned
goods. Even though they aren’t the healthiest choices and are limited in variety, many people are turning to
convenience foods because they're practical, especially for busy individuals who don't have a lot of time to
cook.
Interviewer: So it sounds like people are becoming more conscious of their food choices, but also valuing
practicality.
Sharon: That's right.
Interviewer: Lastly, what diet advice can you share with our listeners?
Sharon: When it comes to choosing a healthy diet, the best advice is to aim for a balanced approach that
includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods. This means incorporating a mix of fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
healthy fats, and lean protein sources into your meals. Salmon and organic chicken breast are the best
sources, but if you don’t eat animal products, then you should eat more nuts and seeds to get enough protein.
It's also important to pay attention to portion sizes because eating more than you need might lead to a
number of health problems. Lastly, you should limit your intake of processed and convenience foods, which
are practical but often high in added sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats.
Interviewer: Thank you for sharing your insights with us today.
Sharon: You're welcome. It's been a pleasure to talk about this topic.
LISTENING AND NOTE-TAKING (TRACK 3)
You are going to listen to a talk on amateur journalism. You will hear the talk only ONCE. Listen to the talk
carefully and take notes in the table below. Later, you will be given 8 minutes to answer some questions
using your notes. Your notes will not be graded.
Hello everyone. Today, I’m going to talk about amateur journalism. In other words, journalism that is done by
ordinary people, not professional journalists. For people like you, who want to get some real writing
experience, this can be a good way to get started, and later I’ll give you some practical tips to help you.
Amateur journalists are providing more and more news thanks to the rise of mobile technologies. Nowadays,
anyone who is close to an important event can become an amateur journalist by writing a news report, taking
photos, and making videos. Big news organizations usually pay an ordinary person a lot of money for such
news reports, photos, and videos, especially if only he or she managed to record them.
Also, amateur journalism isn't just for people who are in the right place at the right time. People can now
write reports and articles about things that a big organization might not be interested in and post their ideas
on their website or blog. This means that all sorts of people can express their views through their websites or
blogs.
In the past, if you wanted to make your opinions known, one of the few ways of doing this was to send a letter
to a newspaper, but normally newspapers only print very few of the thousands of letters that they receive
each day. Now, people can write about anything that is important to them and put it in a blog. As a result,
amateur journalists often write about a subject that is a local issue. And, of course by 'local issue,' I mean
something that has happened in a local school or the traffic in their town, but not something necessarily of
national or international interest.
Amateur journalism is a growing phenomenon. There are now major online amateur newspapers. Ohmynews
in South Korea, for example, has a large number of readers, and for this reason, they can attract advertising
and get income from this. And, as a result, it's become a profitable business. Obviously, amateur news sources
all around the world get all of their income from the adverts that they get from mostly local businesses.
But how can you get involved in this profession? I have some tips for those of you who might be interested.
Well, first, you must have something you want to share with readers. I assume you already have some ideas to
write about. Next, it’s important for an article to attract people’s attention, so put the main facts first. The
main facts should answer these questions: Who? Why? When? How? and Where? Then, fill in the details in
the rest of the article: the best model is really shaped like a pyramid. You put the most important facts at the
top in order to attract attention, and put lots of smaller details down below.
Once you’ve written your article, go over it again to make sure that any numbers you mention are correct. For
instance, if you said something like “Tanya has two kids”, make sure that she really has two children and not
one or three. If you make such simple mistakes, people will start questioning your journalism skills. Also, these
mistakes, may lead people to stop following you. As an amateur journalist, losing followers is the last thing you
want.
Another good piece of advice is to include a picture. It’ll attract more attention and help your readers
understand what you’ve been saying more clearly.
Finally, you need to write a headline – something eye-catching… (fade out)
Instruction: This is the end of the recording.
