Unit purpose/aims
This unit enables learners to acquire the essential knowledge required in order to undertake the inspection,
testing and commissioning of electrotechnical installations and the in-service inspection and testing of electrical
equipment.

This unit is assessed by internally marked multiple-choice and short answer question papers that cover
outcomes 815.1 to 15.4 and an internal practical assessment which covers outcomes 15.1 to 15.4

15.1 Learning outcome
Understand the requirements relative to the inspection, testing and
commissioning of an electrotechnical installation
The learner will need to have the following practical skills and knowledge in order to complete this Learning
outcome.

Practical skills
The learner can:
Obtain the relevant information and documentation required to correctly conduct an inspection of an
electrotechnical installation. (Practical task instructions attached to Learning outcome 15.4)

Knowledge requirements
The learner can:
Explain the purpose and general requirements for initial verification and periodic inspection and testing
Explain the different types of electrical certificates and documentation, and their intended use
Explain the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, for safe inspection in terms of
those carrying out the work and those using the installation and building during the inspection
State the information required to correctly conduct the inspection of an installation (as indicated in
BS7671)
State the statutory and non-statutory documents and relevant guidance material, which apply to the
activity of inspecting and testing electrotechnical installations
Explain the need to comply with statutory and non-statutory documents and guidance material for
particular locations and environments in which installations are inspected and tested
Describe the information to be contained on certificates and inspection and testing reports, and how
the information is recorded
Explain the terms maximum demand and nominal voltage
Describe the certification process

15.1 Learning outcome
Understand the requirements relative to the inspection, testing and
commissioning of an electrotechnical installation

Assessment details

Objective of the assessment To assess the learners knowledge and understanding of the requirements for the
preparation of the testing and commissioning process.

Pass mark Short answer question paper: 18/30

Practical task: assessor checklist: Pass/Fail

Preparation required The assessor to create a task sheet to be used by the learner in
conjunctions with the learner instructions. The task sheet should detail;
o A task indicative of the electrical testing and commissioning
skills being assessed and relevant to the facilities, testing rigs
and equipment the centre has available, that in total meet the
requirements of the Learning outcomes of this unit and is
appropriate for the level of this Advanced Diploma qualification
in terms of the level of complexity. The number of assessed tasks
will be at the discretion of the assessor provided that all of the
outcomes are met
o Diagrams of the electrical installations and equipment etc (if
necessary)
o Enough detail to allow the learner to inspect and safely test and
commission simulated installation circuits.
o Enough detail to allow the learner to inspect, test and record
results on a range of electrical equipment

commissioning of an electrotechnical installation
The learner will need to have the following Practical skills and knowledge in order to complete this Learning

Obtain the correct information required to correctly conduct the testing and commissioning of an
electrotechnical installation
Select the correct instruments and appropriate scales to carry out testing and commissioning
Check and prove testing instruments and their leads for safety and function
Tests and commission an electrotechnical installation to the requirements of the current edition of BS
