3 a) State the first law of thermodynamics as applied to a cycle and prove that for non- 08
flow process, it leads to the energy equation of the form Q1-2 –W1-2 = U2-U1 .
b) Air flows steadily at the rate of 0.5 kg/s through an air compressor entering at 7 m/s, 08
with a pressure of 100 k Pa and a specific volume of 0.95 m3/kg and leaving at 5m/s,
with a pressure of 700k Pa and specific volume of 0.19 m 3/kg. The internal energy of
the air leaving of 90 kJ/kg greater than that of air entering. Cooling water in the
compressor jackets absorbs heat from the air at a rate of 58 kW. Determine the rate
of shaft work input to the air in kW and find the ratio of input to output pipe
diameters.

4 a) A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures 700°C 08


and 50 C. The engine drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between
reservoirs at temperatures of 50°C and – 25°C. The heat transfer to the engine is
2500 kJ and the net work output of the combined engine refrigerator plant is 400 kJ.
(i) Determine the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the
reservoir at 50°C ;(ii) Reconsider (iii) given that the efficiency of the heat engine and
the C.O.P. of the refrigerator are each 45 per cent of their maximum possible values
b) Two Carnot engines work in series between the source and sink temperatures of 550 08
K and 350 K. If both engines develop equal power determine the intermediate
temperature.

5 a) Define the following with suitable expressions on pure substance, i)Sensible heat, 08
ii)Latent heat, iii) Dryness fraction, iv) Enthalpy of Super-heated steam.
b) Define whether the following samples of steam are wet, dry or superheated. Justify 08
your answer. i) Pressure = 1MPa absolute, enthalpy= 2880 kJ/kg, ii) Pressure = 500
kPa absolute, Volume = 0.35m3/kg iii) temperature = 200oC, pressure = 1.2 MPa
iv) temperature =100oC, entropy =6.88 kJ/kg K

6 a) State and prove Clausius inequality? What is the significance of Clausius inequality? 08
b) A lump of steel of mass 8kg at 1000K is dropped in 80kg of oil at 300K.Findout 08
calculations for the entropy change of steel, the oil and the universe. Take specific
heats of steel and oil as 0.4kJ/kg K and 3.5 kJ/kg K respectively.

7 a) A vessel of 0.35 m3 capacity contains 0.4 kg of carbon monoxide (molecular weight = 08


28) and 1 kg of air at 20°C. Calculate :
(i) The partial pressure of each constituent, (ii) The total pressure in the vessel, and
The gravimetric analysis of air is to be taken as 23.3% oxygen (molecular weight =
32) and 76.7% nitrogen (molecular weight = 28).
b) A vessel contains at 1 bar and 20°C a mixture of 1 mole of CO2 and 4 moles of air. 08
Calculate for the mixture : (i) The masses of CO2, O2 and N2, and the total mass ; (ii)
The percentage carbon content by mass ; (iii) The apparent molecular weight and
the gas constant for the mixture ; (iv) The specific volume of the mixture. The
volumetric analysis of air can be taken as 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen.
