Image 1.0 Passive Transport

Passive transport molecules can move across the cell membrane through diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated
diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high-water
concentration to an area of low water concentration. Facilitated diffusion is the movement of molecules across the
cell membrane with the help of transport proteins.

Image 1.1 Active Transport
Active transport is the movement of molecules across a cell membrane against their concentration
gradient, requiring energy. This means that active transport moves molecules from an area of low
concentration to an area of high concentration, which is the opposite of what would happen naturally
through diffusion. Active transport is powered by ATP, the cell's energy currency.
