Problem

Will caffeinated sodas affect plant growth?

Hypothesis
Caffeinated sodas will speed plant growth.

Important variables
-independent variable: water, energy drinks
-dependent variable: plant height
-controlled variable: plant type, amount of liquid, lighting, temperature, same
soil, etc.

Groups
-4 experimental groups: 2 corn with water, 2 corn with energy drink, 2 beans with
water, 2 beans with energy drink. To see if the energy drink affects more than 1
plant.

Trials
Experiment was conducted once over the course of 2 weeks.

Main Materials
-8 large half-waterbottles
-garden soil
-energy drinks
-corn kernels
-beans
-water bottle
-tray to collect drainage
-Ruler

Analysis
Plant height is to be measure with a ruler in millimeters (mm)
-height will be recorded every single day, if not sprouted, then 0mm (measured in
mm)
-time will also be recorded thru ought the experiment.
-a conclusion is to be made, stating the results of the experiment.

Safety
There are no safety concerns in this experiment.

Experimental procedure
1. Start by soaking the corn and beans in water, so they can germinate. This
step is very important. The corn and beans are to be left is water equal
amounts for 1 night.
2. Fill 8 cups with garden soil. All of the soil is to be used from the same
garden.
3. Plant the beans and corn. There are 4 experimental groups:
-2 beans with water
-2 beans with energy drink
-2 corn with water
-2 corn with energy drink,
And label them according to their group. (BA, BE, CA, CE)
4. Start by watering the plants with their liquid, each with same amounts.
5. Put the pots in sunlight, and a tray beneath them to absorb the liquid.
6. Wait for the seeds to sprout.
7. During the experiment, keep track of the plant heights. The heights are to
be measured in mm. unsprouted plants are to be noted with a zero (0).
