Safety instructions

Make sure no liquids get into contact with cables or the interior of the electrical parts of the unit!
Danger of electric shock!

For repairs of electrical, electronic, or mechanical parts always contact your dealer or a qualified
engineer!

Always switch off the apparatus at the mains and unplug before opening! Danger of electric shock!

The apparatus must not be operated in humid or hazardous locations. The maximum humidity allowed
is 80%, the maximum ambient temperature must not exceed 40 °C (104 °F)!

The apparatus must not be exposed to aggressive vapours of acids, alkalis, or solvents.

Use gloves when removing the glass digestion tubes as these can be very hot and there is danger
of burning yourself! Also make sure you wear eye protection!

The apparatus must be operated according to this instruction manual. It is not permitted to change
any part in order to modify its application.

Hydrolyse OPERATION

4. Operation

4.1. Set-up
Place the apparatus with sufficient distance from inflammable walls and objects.

Since those instruments have no possibility to remove acid fumes the installation of this
equipment should be installed in a fume cabinet.

The apparatus is not preassembled. Please unpack the components with care!
Fig. 4.1.1:
1. Place the instrument on a work bench (preferably on a fireproof Set-up of the
ring shaped
base). supports

2. The ring-shaped supports are attached to the rear holes as follows:

insert the support through the top and bottom openings and screw
it tight with the nut provided. Make sure the special supports point
towards the back (also see fig. 3.3. side view).
Nut
3. Put the glass condensers on the ring shaped rests and connect them to the short silicone tu-
bes. Please use a silicone seal for the water outlet and inlet (see chap. 3.1. ‘Front View’).

4. Set-up of the filter insert (only for hydrolysis):

Screw in the support rod into the thread provided for that purpose. Then, push up the filter in-
sert on the support rod till the required height and screw it tightly.

4.2. Setting into operation

Attention when working with acids and alkalis! Make sure you observe the safety instructions con-
cerning work with hazardous materials!

The apparatus has one energy controller per heating place, with built-in bipolar mains switch as well
as one common mains switch with pilot lamp. The unit has an excess current switch at the rear of
each heating position switch off in case of excessive current consumption.
Before you take the unit into operation for the first time make sure that the excess current switches
at the rear are in position 1!

Please check the nominal voltage on the type plate before connecting to the mains.

1. Mains connection:
- Make sure that the mains switch at the front of the instrument is in position „0“
- Connect the mains cable to the shockproof socket

2. Turn on the tap and put the glass condensers on the beakers (also see chap. 3.3. „Side View“).
After the digestion the glass condensers have to be put back on the ring shaped supports and
the tap has to be turned off.

3. Switch on the apparatus by pressing the mains switch.

4. The heating power is continously adjustable from 1-10 on the scale. In position 1 about 10%,
in position 5 about 50% and in position 10 a full of 100 % of the maximum heating power is
achieved.

5.3. Service and cleaning

Your device is practically maintenance-free. It is, however, subject to natural wear and tear as far as
heating and the controller are concerned.

In order to avoid damage by corrosion, spilt liquids (espacially acids and alkalis) must be wiped off
and neutralized immediately, to prevent damage to casing, lacquer or housing.

Attention, when working with acids and alkalis, wear protective gloves!

To minimize any malfunction of the extraction unit, we recommend to have it checked by authorized
service personnel regularly.

5.4. Trouble shooting

The excess current switch cuts off in case of excessive current consumption. Switch on the excess
current switch again. If this problem reoccurs, call service!

In case of breakdown or failure of your extraction unit, please contact your local dealer or:

5.5. Disposal
The disposal of the packaging and the parts used has to be done according to the rules and regu-
lations which are valid in the country of installation. Should the product itself be disposed of, make
sure to observe the local rules and regulations..

5.5.1. Information for the Disposal of Electric and Electronic Instruments within the European
Union

The disposal of electrically operated instruments is settled within the European

Union by national regulations, which are based on the EU-directive 2002/96EC
about electric and electronic used-instruments (WEEE). Thus, all instruments
delivered after August 13th 2005 must not disposed into the communal domestic
waste.

Since the regulations about disposal of waste might vary from one country to
the other within the European Community, we kindly ask you to contact your
supplier or dealer.

In Germany, this obligation for identification will be valid as of March, 23rd 2006. As of this date, C.
Gerhardt will take back all instruments delivered after August, 13th, 2005 without charges and will
dispose of them according to the regulations, or Gerhardt will come to an agreement with the last
user of the unit. For all instruments delivered prior to August 13th, 2005 the last user will be held re-
sponsible for the proper disposal. The only crucial factor accepted, for the chronological placement,
it the serial number at the back of the instrument.

5.5.2. Ban on Materials according to ROHS Regulation 2002/95/EG

Ban on materials from the ROHS regulation 2002/95/EG is not valid for the electro- and electronic
instruments of category 8 and 9 and thus not for those instruments described in this instruction manual.
However, we want to draw your attention to the fact that we feel obliged to observe the regulations for
the RoHs for all our products. Please be kind enough to contact us if you have any further questions.

5.5.3. Transfer

We kindly ask you to always make sure to add this instruction manual to the product in case of
transferring it to another party.
