Gardens have always been a welcome refuge where landscape architects create bold, artistic
spaces and places. Join us as we explore some of the diverse gardens created by Mark Hartley

Designs always have a clear structure that maintains
the “bones” of the garden throughout the season.
Correspondent with the harder structure,
the softer plant forms, with their ever-changing
rhythms, appeal to the senses.

The loose symmetry and repetition of
both the soft and hard material assist
to deliberately divide the space,
creating a series of courtyards.

The architecture of the garden should
blend with the architecture of the home.
As well, the furniture used here is light
and transparent, which illustrates how
your patio furniture should accent your
garden design, rather than overwhelm it.

Fly through the air with the greatest of ease

According to research from the International Spa Association,
day spas continue to dominate the spa industry in Canada
at 77 per cent, with destination spas accounting for a mere
one per cent. However, some of us are probably crossing the
border for a spa experience, which would influence our desti-
nation spa participation numbers. Typically destination spa
wellness programs combine fitness such as hiking, cycling
and other outdoor pursuits, meditation, spa treatments and
healthy cuisine. At Solace Spa at Boyne Mountain in
Michigan, they’ll literally sweep you off your feet with their
Trapeze-Experience. After a ground lesson and warm-up,
guests are strapped into a harness and are soon flying high
above the net on a trapeze. According to spa director Sean
Handler, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about yourself
and overcome your fear. This summer, Solace Spa is offering
a package including the Trapeze-Experience, one night accom-
modation, breakfast, and a spa treatment.

Never too old to spa

Savvy real estate developers are building a spa as a key
component in their planned communities, targeting both
baby boomers and young families. Origin at Longwood, a retire-
ment community in Nanaimo, BC, features the Evergreen Spa.
This innovative continuing care retirement community offers
spa and esthetic treatments including manicures, pedicures,
facials, massage, reflexology and more. Catering to the wellness
lifestyle, they’ve hired an executive chef committed to growing
his own herbs and using 80 per cent or greater scratch-cooking
methods to ensure tasty, nutritious, gourmet meals. Look for

Blackberry addiction
Do you hyperventilate at the thought of turning off your
Blackberry long enough to relax for a spa treatment?
According to AOL’s Email Addiction Survey, the average
e-mail user checks mail about five times a day, and 59 per
cent with portable devices are using them to check e-mail
every time a new message arrives. And 37 per cent are check-
ing while they drive! Industry studies suggest four out of five
spas report consumers want less connectivity, preferring to
relax and enjoy the spa experience. But one in five have found
that their guests wish to stay connected right at the spa. For
those suffering from a Blackberry addiction, there is a new
treatment creeping onto spa menus, the Blackberry hand
massage. Using acupressure and massage techniques, it
relieves stress and tension in the thumbs and wrists to help
ease the muscles and reduce repetitive strain injuries.

DIFFERENT CHARACTER. SAME DNA.
If you have always dreamed of Bentley ownership, there has never been a wider choice. Or a wiser one.

For some, the bespoke exclusivity of the Arnage four-door will exert the greatest appeal. For others, it
will be the performance focus of the 552 hp all-wheel drive Continental GT coupé; or perhaps its
spacious four-door stablemate, the Continental Flying Spur.

Still undecided? Bentley Toronto has the complete story. Rest assured: there are no wrong choices.
