to innovation in motion, like Roberto

Julia Muggenburg, designer and creator of Belmacz, has a private salon,
also in London’s Mayfair. From here she sells her distinctive contempo-
rary jewels, with their sophisticated barbaric flavor that subtly blends
fine art and tribal ornament.

In Brazil, forward-thinking and design-driven jeweller, H. Stern, has inte-
grated a spa into its store in the Rio Design Barra Shopping Centre, near
the beach in Rio de Janeiro. The spa has been created in partnership with
L’Occitane, the French Provencal beauty brand. The two spaces, the spa
and jewellery boutique, are interconnected both in architec-
tural design and in concept. In the jewellery boutique, aromatherapy,
tisanes and quick massages reinforce the sensuality of the jewels, the way
they feel on the skin, while in the Spa, showcases present jewellery inspi-
red by nature and the elements. Treatments, called rituals to reflect the
rituals surrounding jewellery, incorporate pearl powder and silver stones
designed to echo H. Stern’s Golden Stones collection; treatment rooms are
named after gemstones, like Tourmaline and Aquamarine.
“H. Stern’s new SPA is the most concrete expression of the brand’s long
term commitment to the concepts of well-being and self-gratification, for
a long time associated with the jeweller’s positioning, strategy and marke-
ting efforts. It further presents to its clients in Brazil and foreign visitors
the idea of a multi-faceted shopping experience,
which distinguishes H. Stern in the global luxury arena.”

MGS
In 2008 Golden Dew, one of the biggest and most successful retail
jewellers in Korea, introduced Stylus, a young, accessible, fashion-
forward brand, designed to deliver the messages of love and affection.
The retail concept reflects this fresh approach, clean, contemporary
and modern, in neutral shades of grey and peach, highlighted with huge
images of jewels and illustrations of their imaginary muse,
Luxie, whose beauty and confidence, explains Hasun Park, head
designer for Golden Dew, welcomes the customer and guides her through

The Chinese silver jewellery brand, MGS, established in Thailand in
the early 1970s, is inspired by 19th century Thai culture, with a firm
focus on environmental protection, wellbeing and comfort, a theme
expressed through the tactility of textured silver that feels good on the
skin, moves with body and is easy to wear. The jewellery has an exotic
flavour, derived from its Thai origins, but fuses Eastern and Western

JEWELS
OF THE
KALAHARI
After a visit to Africa, jewellery marketing executive, Anna Haber was
captivated by the beauty, dignity and ingenuity of the Bushmen of the
Kalahari Desert, who have been making jewellery for generations, for the
ritualistic personal adornment that is so much part of their culture and
heritage. So much so that Anna and jeweller Sabine Roemer decided to
collaborate with the Bushmen to create a one of a kind 19 piece collec-
tion of jewellery, fashion-oriented, fusing the natural resources used by
the Bushmen, ostrich eggshell and recycled glass beads, with western
materials like leather, silk, silver, velvet and satin. The collection, conti-
nuing the storytelling traditions that are woven around their crafts, links
the Bushmen’s rich culture and ancient history with the fast-moving, ever-
changing modern world.

This theme introduces strong, barrier-breaking aesthetic codes that work towards a modern iconic classic
jewel, expressing its moment in time, the personality and values of its wearer. Powerfully modernist, urban
statement jewels are underlined with meaning and references to the world around them, like a Herzog de
Meuron building, the stadium in Munich or a jewel by Anish Kapoor, distilled from his monumental mirror
sculptures. The look is aristocratic, architectural and abstract, with tactility and sensuality, reflecting a
new, powerful femininity.

Experimental, architectural, design-driven structures with a Cubist
and freedom through abstract, distilled forms, and unrestrained flavor hold gemstones, like treasures, within. Kinetic stones are
compositions of stones of different sizes, textures and colours. This twisted and turned playfully by the wearer, as in Kamila Ruberg’s fine
combination of tribal and modern art has been perfected by German- gold kinetic constructions. Excess ornament and narratives give way
born, London based designer, Julia Muggenburg of Belmacz . to mechanical precision.

Memories is a nostalgic theme with a contemporary edge, remembering the past but living in the
present and looking to the future through a new ingenuity and creativity in exquisite craftsmanship
and artistry. Louis Vuitton’s L’Ame du Voyage is built on memories, souvenirs and glimpses of a
personal journey, captured forever through mesmerizing technology and handicraft. Seductive and
feminine, this is a modern maximal jewel, delicate and detailed, with a childlike “kidult“ quality.
If it were a city, it might be Paris or even Istanbul, exquisitely captured in the huge pictorial rings by
Sevan Bicacki. Emotive jewels bring a new slant to the concept of preciousness.

Exuberant, extravagant and experimental, these
jewels are opulent but playful, breaking
through polite, bourgeois boundaries and conventions.
The theme suggests a rich, multi-layered jewel,
often worn in unexpected ways, stacked in multiples,
worn to express personality rather than social
status. Strongly, darkly talismanic, influences and
inspirations are mixed with joyous abandon, to
create an extrovert, vibrantly colourful
glamour. There’s a sense of the sophisticated,
yet richly layered style that has become the signature
of Etro, the Italian fashion and lifestyle brand.

This fifth theme represents a global phenomenon, the rise and influence of major ethnic cultures, particularly China and India, each
with many facets to its character, each exerting an important influence on the Western world and each developing its own microclimate
of themes and mixed inspirations. To illustrate the phenomenon, Gem Visions 2011 explores China’s ability to fuse Asian traditions
with Western style, its quest to create future memories and ancestral jewels, and looks at India as a massive emerging market, with its
distinctive cultural themes ranging from Bollywood extravaganzas, through exquisite Mughal art and craftsmanship, to love and rebirth.
In Hong Kong, designers and craftsmen like Michelle Ong for Carnet and Wallace Chan fuse old and new, East and West, and in India,
in Mumbai, Viren Bhagat regenerates his heritage using breathtaking craftsmanship to create contemporary Mughal-inspired jewels,
tinged with Art Deco, so loved by the Maharajahs. Dreamstorming creates a jewel that can travel from London to Shanghai, by way of
New York, Paris or Delhi.
