The too tries to automate a typical discussion on this subject that is sormally presented in several undergraduate Fluid Mechanics textbooks. Te software docs not try to duplicate the pedagogical contents of the fextbook but Ines to automate the equations and other pertinent merical needs, The subject is relevant to both the Mechanieal/ Manufacturing and Civil Engineering technology students. An attempt has been made fo preset the varied computational activities in an integrated manner. INTRODUCTION “The topic of Open Chanael Flow occupies an important section in undergreduate Fid Mechanics Course, There ar several textbooks? that do wonder {ob in explaining this subject hati aught to Mechanica, Civil and Manufacturing Engineering technology students. To supplement the theory there are some soar that automate the equations that ae presented during the discussion However most ofthe software, try to focus onthe flow of flu inthe pipe during ‘uid flow analysis. There are some specialised software fr performing open-channel flow analysis buts scope is limited to certain industrial sections and cannot be used for academic purpose. To cater tothe educational nced some modules have been developed in commercially available mathematical and spreadshet® packages. However there are certain constants associated wih these modules like) the user needs to have acess to the software that loads these ‘modules, b he user needs te familiar with the software's environment, ) th utr has to refer otexbooksimanals fr entering data fom tables and chars. Keoping the above limitations in mind the author has designed and developed a software that can be quite useful for the students, The software canbe thought of asa calculator ora toolbox for opet-channe! flow calculations. The user interface as heen so designed that there i very Title tone Tearing ime involved. The theme ofthis software is very’ different fom other educational software avaiable i this area: thas been designed asa quick solver The software acts like & black box ad shields the user from selecting the equations. Also no programming is required to tie up the equations to Values obtained from tables and chart. As «result the software works like calculator and comes in handy when the students wants to chock his/her calculation or ative at a result quickly SALIENT FEATURES ‘As has been discussed ahead the software is designed like a specialized calculator for open-channel flow. To help in this activity the following features are ‘embeded inthe program to aid the end user 8) _ items are grouped together ins logical and numbered manner For example ithe task isto find the channel section propety the wer performs the setivity by following the numerically arranged steps, Firs channel section is selected from a drop-lown ist box, Next values are provided to the known parameters associated with the channel, The user also selects the typeof units and automaticaly the standard units are displayed. An image box i present to clarify the terms associated with the selected section, Finally by clicking the solve button, results are obtained forthe section arc hydraulic diameter and hydraulic depth, To summarize, the user stants from item number one and goes down exscuting the next items one by one til the final result i obtained. Figure 1 gives ‘typi layout for performing an setvity Sarita aenoee Te Tacmokgy re Figure 1, Sereen for uniform-flow calculation 'b) the user inpur box has been specially designed to accommodate not only a single numerical data but mathematical expression as wel, This means that one can ether enlera number like “I” or enter a mathematical expression like “cs (0, 10°0, (4°2-tan(45°)-13) et.” each of whichis readin bythe text box as ‘having the value unity, The ability to enter expression becomes useful ina variety of way: a) the wer doesnot need a calculator to conver an expression ito a single value and then input it into the textbox, b the input boxes can recognize several special mathemascal functions that comes in handy for technicel ‘computation, For example while calulatig the volume flow rate for uniform Mow a8 seen in Figure I, the value for known term hydaulie diameter is entered asthe product of two quantities. The input box can also directly handle special mathematica erm like “pi. CH. Figure 2, User interface for Channel Section calculations ©) _ Several ofthe terms have tooltip help for term explanation. Tis comes in useful when the definition ofthe term is needed quickly. Figure 2 shows the tookip help associated with the term hydraulic diameter. Also as has been discussed ahead, a picture is provided to elucidate any further explanation, coNTENTS “The softwares designed to keep the major topics of intrest as clickable buttons and which intr is arranged vertically on the lech side, The topics ae: ‘Introduction to Open Channel Flow + Chanel Section Property + Uniform Flow + Critic Flow + ried Flow Hydrate Jump aenoee Te Tacmobgr ree 4 + Roughness Coefficient Iewill nat be possible to discuss all he topis and thet functionalives, but the salient features for some ofthem are discussed below. ‘Channel Section Property: In his section, the user can perform analysis to find ut the arca, hydraulic diameter and hydraulic depth for the open channel section. The selection combo box (item 1) contains eleven different sections (rectangle, trapezoid, triangle, cree, parabola, trough with round bottom, round. comered rectangle, ounded-bottom triangle, asymmetric triangle, quedrilatral with one vertical side and rectangle of great wid) that canbe handled. The parameters associated with each appear automatically in section 3, once the selection forthe channel i made Uniform Flow. This section doesnot limit itself wo the calculation of flow velocity or the volume flow. It handles all parameters tht are involved during the analysis of open channel flow fr flow tht is uniform in mare. The parameters that are involved in the analysis are low velocity, volumetric flow, fd depth, the bed slope, hydreuliediame‘er, manning cooficient andthe fiction factor. Once the unkown term is selected onthe left sid in section 1), section 3 gets populated with other terms whose values are needed for ealeulation, The type of units selected next and by clicking the solve button the unknown parameter is {immediately calculated. As has been discussed ahead, numerical expressions can be entered into the text boxes for quick caleultion, ‘Weir: Weir are built across an open channel ta aie the Mid evel orto measure it, They are perhaps the oldest and sill the mot useful ofthe hydraulic structures. The section on weirs handles eight diferent kinds: Sharp-crested weir in rectangular channel, rectangula-notchthinplate weir, triangular-notc thin plate weir, proportional sure-notch thin plate wer, long-bas rectangular wer long-based round nosed wer, semictcula weir and hyérofol shaped weit. nce the typeof Weir is selected, and the proper values are entered forthe calculation, the discharge ofthe uid though the weir gets computed, An image box Aisplays the selected weit and explains the different terms involved during ealeulation, CONCLUSION “This paper deserbes a software that addresses the pedagogical issues associated with open chanael low calelatons It is be noted that there are ‘mathematical software that provide a limited add-on capability for performing similar ‘ype exercises. The discussed software, on the other hand isa standalone and customized application tha ust handles open-channel flow analysis, It cogently glues together a multitude of analyscal and textual issues associated with 2 ‘open-channel ina user-rendly windows environment. The software is designed to serve as a toThox for calulation purpose. The topics in the software are jiulciously segmented to include the most common subjects that are covered ia the open-chaael Now chapter of uid mechanics textbooks, The sofware serves a8 a supplementary tool to these textual contents and is able to provide information on the fy and a the same time help in the computation of sever associted mathematical problems. To accomplish a quick and elfcient numerical solution, special text boxes are provided. The text boxes havea special feature ‘in tat they ean accept not only a unique numeri! value bt a mathematical expression as wel. Throughout the software there s help available via tooltip, erm
