WHY CHINA IS INDIA’S ENEMY NO ONE

1. As compared to Pakistan, China is India’s bigger enemy. Like China, India is a developing
nation and has a vast young population. If guided properly, India is likely to grow faster than
China and can possibly surpass them in the next 15 years.
2. China realizes the potential of India and considers it to be a great competitor. It is aware that
India had no war in the past 10 years and if it is left free to grow, it will grow very strong and
may become unstoppable. What China did 30 yrs back, India has started doing now and
therefore, it is bound to grow as fast as China.
3. In the recent past, India has undertaken a few concrete steps towards growth. They are:-
(a) Nuclear energy agreement with 9 countries.
(b) Passed Right to Education act.
(c) About to undertake judicial reform.
(d) Special drives to improve rural economy.
(e) Lokpal bill against corruption has been passed in Lok Sabha and is awaiting its
clearance from Rajya Sabha. The fight against corruption has reached the streets
and one by one the corrupts are been exposed.
(f) Many other important bills such as Land Acquisition bill, Higher Education bill and
many others are in the pipeline.
4. Chinese are certain that the combined effect of all above would push India on a speedy
growth.
5. Considering all aspects, China is going all out to counter India on all fronts. Some of the
examples are:-
(a) Supporting Pakistan on 26/11 issue.
(b) Upgrading Pakistan’s missile and Nuclear Programme.
(c) Establishing Naval bases in Quadar near Karachi in Pakistan, Maldives,
Humbentoda in SriLanka, Chittagong in Bangladesh and Cocoa Islands in
Myanmar.
(d) Creating hindrance during nuclear clearance being given to India at Austria.
(e) Creating hindrance when India sought loan from ADB.
(f) Undertaking deep border Incursions.
(g) Aiding and Abetting India’s Naxal Movement.

6. Besides this, China is also helping India’s neighbouring countries with an aim to guide them
against India. Some of the examples are:
(a) On August 2015,China-backed $10 billion nuclear power plant near Karachi to add
1,100 megawatts to the energy-starved country's electric grid. China has also
invested in many hydro projects of Pakistan which indirectly affect the water flow
of many rivers in India.
(b) China has also inaugurated the biggest free trade area with six other South Asian
countries. This project covers around 2 billion people from Brunei, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Phillipines, Singapore and Thailand.
(c) China is planning a 3 billion $ project in Lumbini, Nepal. The aim of the project is
to transform Lumbini into a world tourist spot and a pilgrimage centre. China has
also promised to provide 135 million $ project in Nepal to boost its infrastructure
and security.

China has overtaken India to become the largest contributor of Foreign Direct Investment to
Nepal .

(d) In 2011, China surpassed Japan’s 1.2 billion $ aid to Sri Lanka. It has also
promised to help Sri-Lanka in its infrastructure development and also expand its
two way trade.
(e) China and Russia agreed to increase their bilateral trade to 200 billion$ by 2020.
7. China wants India to remain embroiled in its internal matters and not to remain free to
concentrate on its development. If possible, China would like India to get disintegrated so that
it is allowed to grow without any challenge.

Recently China has experienced a huge economic slowdown which can benefit India in following
ways:-
1.It has resulted in cheap global crude and commodity prices which mean slower input costs
translating into higher profit margins for many Indian corporates.
2.With the government of India focussing on “Make in India,” this may be the time to provide
impetus to manufacturing and even invite Chinese companies to set up manufacturing base in India.
A slowdown in the Chinese economy would also mean that global finance and capital would look for
new growth centres to invest. By providing an attractive alternative to China, India can have a much
bigger pie of global capital, which in any case it needs to fund its huge infrastructure funding
requirement.
