Adverb as modifiers

1. Verb modifier- these are the adverbs that modifies the verb in the sentence.
For example: The athlete can run fast. in this sentence the word fast modifies the verb run.
Next example: The girls ran quickly but happily through the puddle. (The adverbs quickly and
happily modify the verb ran by telling how.)

2. Adjective modifier- these are the adverbs that modifies the adjective in the sentence and an
adverb used to modify an adjective adds a degree of intensity to the adjective.
Let’s take a look of these examples: 1. Sailboats are really beautiful to watch. In this sentence
the adverb really modifies the adjective beautiful. 2. The very blue bird flew. The word very in
this sentence is an adverb modifying the adjective blue. It's telling us how blue the blue is.

3. Adverb modifier- these are the adverbs that modifies the other adverb in the sentence. When
an adverb modifies another adverb, an adverb can answer questions regarding the extent to
which that adverb modifies the other adverb.
Like for these examples: 1. The athlete can run very fast. In this sentence the adverb very
modifies the other adverb which is fast.
2. The restaurant is almost fully booked. in this sentence, it answers the question to what extent
is the restaurant fully booked? which is almost.

4. Some adverbs can modify entire sentences—unsurprisingly, these are called sentence adverbs.
Common ones include generally, fortunately, interestingly, and accordingly. Sentence adverbs
don’t describe one particular thing in the sentence—instead, they describe a general feeling
about all of the information in the sentence. For example, perhaps, Nena’s family will give a
party. In this sentence, the word perhaps functions as an adverb because this adverb making a
comment on the whole sentence or clause.

Adverb and adverbials

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Meanwhile, adverbials act like adverbs to modify a
verb or a clause. Adverbials can consist of a single word or an entire phrase.
