INTERNET

Internet
→ Large network of computers that contain information and
technology tools that anybody with internet connection can access.
→ Main feature: World Wide Web

Level of Internet
1.) Surface Web
→ Accessible through normal
2.) Deep Web
→ Online banking and Government devices
3.) Dark Web
→ Encrypted.
→ Needs a specific software (e.g. Tor)

Webpage → Single screen of data.


Homepage → 1st page of a website
Website → All related web pages for an organization or individual
Hypertext Markup language (HTML) → Basic code of web pages
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) → Rules for transferring files over the net.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) → Address of a web page. E.g. www.youtube.com

Top Level Domains


.com → Commercial .mil → Military
.edu → Education .net → Networking providers
.gov → Government .org → Non profit organization
.int → Organization

Country Based: E.g. .ph → Philippines

Internet Browser
→ Computer program to answer and display webpages.
→ Examples
1. Microsoft Edge

4. Safari
5. Opera

Search Engine
→ Search the internet using keywords
→ Post search: Creates indexes of WebPages

Link → Underlined word(s), phrase(s), or graphics on a Web page that transports the reader to additional or
related information on the Internet.

I.P. ADDRESS
• Internet Protocol Address
• identified by a set of unique numbers composed of four different numbers separated by periods
• E.g. 205.134.120.60.

Intranet → Network access for file sharing within an organization that is not accessible outside the
organization.

Website for Health Consumers


1) Hospital websites
o Provides information about the disease, treatment & healthy lifestyle.
o Example: Mayo Clinic website

2) Disease specific website


o Organizations with efforts to a specific disease.
o Provides basic information about the specific disease & FAQ.
o Example: http://www.aplastic.org

3) Government sites
o Site that provides access to information about specific disease condition.
o Example: CDC website

→Multiple users come together to collaborate in writing on the content.

Evaluating Health Related Sites

1) Accuracy and Currency →Properly cited within the last 5 years


2) Design → Easy to navigate and presented to the intended audience.
3) Author and Authority → Credibility to write the information.

→ Password protected area of the web which registered users
