Semester JAN 2024

Open to Semester 6,12
Course Code PH3244
Course title Physics Lab IV *
Nature of Course LB - Lab
Credit 4
Coordinator and Dr. Ashna Bajpai
participating faculty (if any) Dr. Shivprasad Patil
Pre-requisites Basic Quantum Mechanics, Solid State Physics &
Electronics
Objectives This lab course is meant for students interested in
experimental physics. It aims to introduce a broad range of
experimental techniques to determine important material
properties including mechanical, thermal and magnetic
ones. Students can learn to make circuit using transistors,
op-amps and FET. Experiments cover topics that student
typically comes across during the lecture courses in
quantum physics, condensed matter physics & electronics.
Course content At least 8 experiments from the list must be completed.
1. Cornu’s method to determine Young’s modulus
2. Verification of Curie Weiss law for a ceramic capacitor
3. Quincke*s method (magnetic susceptibility)
4. Thermal diffusivity of brass
5. Transistor- Biasing, Amplifier, Oscillator
6. FET- Biasing, Amplifier, Oscillator
7. Op-Amp- inverting, non-inverting, differentiator, integrator
8. Ultrasonic Diffraction
9. Zeeman effect
10. Generation and transmission of EM waves (Lecher)
11. Frank Hertz

Evaluation / Assessment a. End-sem Examination - 40%

b. Mid-sem Examination- 0%
c. Continuous Evaluations – 30%
d. Lab Records for Each Experiments - 30%

Suggested readings 1. Solid State Physics by Ashcroft and Mermin,

2. The Art of Electronics: P. Horowitz and W. Hill (1989) 2nd
