After studying this topic you will be able to
• Explain the scheme of SCADA
• State the hardware and softwares used in SCADA
• Explain the scheme of DCS
• State the hardware and softwares used in DCS

2
SCADA
• SCADA stands for supervisory control and data
acquisition. It generally refers to an industrial
control system i.e. a computer system
monitoring and controlling a process.
•A SCADA System usually consists of the
following subsystems ( Hardware):
•A Human-Machine Interface or HMI is the
apparatus which presents process data to a
human operator, and through this, the human
operator monitors and controls the process.

3
SCADA
•A supervisory (computer) system, gathering
(acquiring) data on the process and sending
commands (control) to the process.
• Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) connecting to
sensors in the process, converting sensor signals to
digital data and sending digital data to the
supervisory system.
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs) used as field
devices because they are more economical,
versatile, flexible, and configurable than special-
purpose RTUs.
4
SCADA
• Communication infrastructure connecting the
supervisory system to the Remote Terminal Units.

10
SCADA Hardware
• HMI
• Operating Stations
• PLCs
• Modems / Radio Modems
• RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) :The RTU provides
an interface to the field analog and digital signals
situated at each remote site.

11
SCADA Software
• AB : RSVIEW32
• SIEMENS : WINCC
• WONDERWARE : IN TOUCH
• HONEYWELL : SCAN3000
• GENERAL ELECTRIC : INTELLUTION IFIX
• MODBUS, OPC, Winlog Pro etc.

12
Distributed control System
• A distributed control system (DCS) is a specially
designed automated control system that consists
of geographically distributed control elements
over the plant or control area.
• It differs from the centralized control system
wherein a single controller at central location
handles the control function, but in DCS each
process element or machine or group of machines
is controlled by a dedicated controller.

13
Distributed control System

• DCS consists of a large number of local

controllers in various sections of plant control
area and are connected via a high speed
communication network.

• Output cards (4-20 mA, digital)
• Power supply module
• Communication card
• Cables
• Controller with input / output card
• DCS Software
• SIMATIC PCS-7 from Siemens
