Financial institutions (FIs) provide a wide range of financial products and services. They
serve as intermediaries between providers and recipients of capital, facilitate asset and risk
management, and execute transactions involving cash, securities, and other financial assets.

The general structure of financial statements for FIs is not that much different from that of a
regular company. However, due to the nature of their operations, there are several unique
characteristics of financial statements such as the sub-classification of accounts.

Required:

a) With examples, explain what makes financial institutions different from other types of
companies, such as manufacturers or merchandisers.

b) Describe how financial reports of financial institutions differ from other companies.
Consider the following;

i. The content and structure of income statement

ii. The content and structure of statement of financial position
iii. Disclosure requirements.
