1.2 Safety measures when using testers
and measuring instruments during a
road test
To prevent personal injury and material damage to the vehicle,
observe the following:

WARNING

Vehicles with dual clutch gearbox - risk of injury and accident


by accidental engagement of gear while engine is running.
♦ Before working on vehicle with engine running, move se‐
lector lever into position “P” and apply parking brake.
Risk of poisoning!
♦ While the engine is running, an exhaust gas extraction
system must be attached to the exhaust system.

Observe the following if test and measuring instruments are re‐


quired during a road test:

WARNING

Risk of accident due to distraction and inadequate securing of


test and measuring equipment
Danger as a result of activation of front passenger airbag in the
event of an accident
• Operation of test and measuring equipment while driving
results in distraction.
• Greater injury hazard as a result of unsecured test and
measuring equipment.
♦ Always strap in place test and measuring equipment on
rear seat and have a 2nd person sitting on the rear seat
to operate them.

To prevent personal injury and damage to or destruction of elec‐


trical and electronic components, observe the following:

with the ignition switched off.

♦ Install needle bearings with lettered side (thicker metal) to‐
wards fitting tool.
♦ Tapered roller bearings fitted to one shaft must be renewed as
a set. Use same make of bearings.

♦ Heat inner races to about 100° C before installing.


♦ Do not interchange outer or inner races of bearings of the
same size. The bearings are matched in pairs.

3.1.3 Shims
♦ Measure shims at several points with a micrometer. The var‐
ious thicknesses make it possible to achieve the exact shim
thickness required.
♦ Check for burrs and damage.
♦ Install only flawless shims.

3.2 Gaskets and seals


♦ Thoroughly clean parting surfaces, and apply sealing paste ⇒
Electronic parts catalogue (ETKA) .
♦ Apply sealant uniformly but not too thick.
♦ Renew sealing rings.

Before installing, lightly oil space on external circumference be‐
tween sealing lips with high performance oil for all-wheel drive
coupling (specification for high performance oil for all-wheel drive
coupling ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue (ETKA) ).
After installation, check oil level in all-wheel drive coupling and
replenish if necessary ⇒ page 25 .

Oil for the “final drive” and oil for the “all-wheel drive coupling” are
available as replacement parts ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue “ET‐
KA” .
Do not mix »additives« in oil.

Be careful when working with oil. Dispose of drained oil ac‐


cording to regulations. Remember: one drop of oil will contam‐
inate 1,000 litres of water.

– Detach vacuum lines -2- and -3- from vacuum unit -1-.
– Connector -4- is not detached.
Continued for all vehicles
– Lower final drive completely.
• The rear final drive must be raised slightly in the area of the
propshaft flange and guided over the anti-roll bar.
• On vehicles with differential lock, guide right drive shaft past
rear final drive.

– Using filling device - VAS 6291 A- , add enough fluid so that it
runs out between the adapter of the filling device and the final
drive housing.
– Remove filling device and adapter; excess fluid may still run
out.
Fluid level is correct when all-wheel drive coupling is filled to lower
edge of filler hole.

6.1 Function of differential lock


Installed as an option in the Transporter with 4 MOTION is a me‐
chanical rear axle differential lock.
The rear axle differential lock can be engaged at speeds of up to
45 km/h. Differential lock warning lamp - K81- in dash panel insert
indicates that rear axle differential lock is engaged.
Differential lock is engaged and disengaged with rear differential
lock switch - E121- . Differential lock control unit - J187- checks
whether conditions for engaging differential lock have been met.
If this is the case, all-wheel drive control unit - J492- engages lock
by means of differential lock control unit - J187- , differential lock

other. Reinstall in same position to prevent damage through
imbalance causing rumbling noises.

• Position the splitter close to the propshaft, so that the entire
constant velocity joint is enclosed in the splitter.
