♦ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them over.

Use lint-free cloths only.
♦ Carefully cover opened components or seal them if repairs
cannot be carried out immediately.
♦ Install only clean parts; do not remove new parts from pack‐
aging until immediately before installing. Do not use parts that
have been kept unpackaged (for example in toolboxes).
♦ Transportation and protective packaging and sealing caps
must be removed only immediately before fitting.
♦ When making repairs, remove oil from connection and hose
ends.
♦ If system is open, do not work with compressed air. Do not
move the vehicle.

– Remove main bearing cap and clean bearing cap and bearing
journal.
– Place a length of Plastigage corresponding to the width of the
bearing on the bearing journal or in the bearing shells.
• The Plastigage must rest in the middle of the bearing shell.

crankshaft while doing so.
– Remove main bearing cap again.
– Compare width of Plastigage with the measurement scale.
Radial clearance:
• New: 0.026 to 0.040 mm
• Wear limit: 0.16 mm.

♦ Cleaning procedure:
♦ Use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarse dirt.
♦ Spray brake cleaner or suitable cleaning agent into glow plug
port, let it work in briefly, and blow out with compressed air.
♦ Then use a cloth moistened with oil to clean the glow plug port.

engine speed sender - G28- .
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Install engine speed sender - G28- .
– Attach connector for engine speed sender - G28- .
– Clip lines for engine speed sender - G28- in place.
– Removing and installing vane pump for power assisted steer‐
ing ⇒ Running gear, axles steering; Rep. gr. 48 .
– Install air conditioner compressor ⇒ Heating, air conditioning;
Rep. gr. 87 .
– Install engine assembly mounting ⇒ page 15 .
– Install front torque reaction support ⇒ page 15 .
– Install noise insulation.
– Read event memory ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
