CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR A FUNDED MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME IN DATA


SCIENCE & EXPLORATION GEOLOGY

Background

The University of Zambia, School of Mines, Geology Department, has partnered with Copperbelt
University, Stanford University, USA and Kobold Metals Limited on the Stanford Mineral X Programme.
The purpose of the programme is to foster research, innovation and acceleration to a renewable energy future. It
focuses on technological innovation needed to create a resilient mineral supply chain to achieve clean renewable
energy. Furthermore, the programme will also develop new pathways in the Mineral-Energy nexus, such as
geothermal energy and renewable energy resources that enable a decarbonized mineral supply chain. Through
this partnership, a new post-graduate programme, MSc Data Science and Exploration Geology, has
been developed at the University of Zambia in collaboration with Stanford University. It seeks to
address critical skills required to use technology such artificial intelligence in mineral and energy
resources exploration. KoBold Metals Zambia Limited will support 10 (ten) full scholarships in this
programme.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants for this scholarship must:

(i) have a Bachelor’s Degree (with credit or better) with a major in Geology, Natural Resources,
Geotechnical Engineering, Geostatistics, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Earth and environmental
sciences, or any other related science-based field from a recognised institution;
(ii) have taken a basic course in computer programming and statistics and /or data analysis and
must demonstrate programming skills in Python or similar programming language; and
(iii) have a relevant work experience as an added advantage.
Applicants must include 1-2 pages of motivational statement explaining their interest in the Masters’
programme and a summarized research proposal.
