The key to a successful product is its marketing – how it is promoted and sold. Many products wouldn’t have been so successful without
powerful marketing. They may not be the best quality, but good marketing has helped to give these products a long life. In recent surveys,
consumers said that they were willing to pay higher prices for trusted brands because they identified their products with good quality. This
trust is created over time. TV adverts, which show brands or products repeatedly, are particularly effective at building trust.
Advertisers know that consumers often remember adverts that they’ve seen, and TV is very successful because it reaches such a large
number of people at the same time. Consumers told researchers that they trusted TV advertising more than internet advertising and that
commercials on TV were more likely to affect them emotionally than other types of advertising.
Successful marketing isn’t cheap, of course, as a lot of skill, talent and money are invested to make sure that it has a positive effect. The
amount of money spent is usually worth it in terms of increased sales figures. Big brands rarely regret spending money on their publicity!
Two of the most expensive adverts of all time were for two world famous brands. In 2001, Pepsi produced an advert which showed people
drinking the product in different years from 1958. The advert required a lot of dancers and was filmed at different locations around the
world, from beaches to bars, and cost over $8 million to produce. Pepsi said that the advert had cost a lot more than they had originally
planned, but they felt that the end result had been well worth the expense.
In 2004, Chanel spent even more than Pepsi on an advert to promote its famous N°5 perfume. The expensive short film was made with
well-known actors in film studios. Viewers loved it, and sales of the perfume reached a record high that year. If people know and like the
people who appear in the adverts, it seems that they will believe that the product must be worth buying.
