7
What are the words that you have looped that refer to our
health and safety?
We have careful, dentist, harmless and neatly.
These words also end with suffixes.
Today’s lesson is all about suffixes like -ly, -ful, -less and -able.
Suffixes are syllables or word parts added to the end of
another word. They modify or change the meaning of the word.

breakable

properly prayerful
y

Now here is a poem for you, but before we recite it let us unlock
some difficult words:
applied – used (synonym)
Mario applied the simple baking terms in his recipe.
modified- changed (synonym)
The pandemic modified our lifestyles.
existed – lived (synonym)
In some of our seas, rare aquatic animals existed.

New World, New Words

Over the hills, over the plains

Words can be read, words can be heard

People are ruled by varied words

People use them to express their feelings and

thoughts.

There were suffixes that existed

Like ful, ly, less and able

Once these words! were being applied

Words were truly modified.

New world, new words

Like ful for careful , ly for eagerly

Less for fearless, able for believable

New world, new words they were liveable

https://phmillennia.com/most-remarkable-mountains-in-the-philippines/

Answer the following questions about the poem.

1. What do we read, hear and consider as liveable? words

2. Why do we use them? For us to express our feelings and also
our thoughts.

9
3. What happened when we added suffixes to words according
to the poem?
The meaning of words were modified or changed.
4. What are the suffixes mentioned in the poem?
-ly,-ful,- less and -able
5. How do you think we should live in this changing world?
We should live with extra care and accept the changes
positively.

Suffixes are syllables or word parts added to the end of a root

word and they change the meaning of the word or their form.
In the poem we have words with suffixes.

careful is composed of care (the root

word) + -ful (the suffix, that means full of)
so the word careful means full of care

https://fr.freepik.com/vecteurs-premium/enfant-parent-traverser- route_5309494.htm

slowly is composed of slow ( the rootword )

+ -ly (the suffix, that answers the question
how)so the word slow which is an adjective
becomes an adverb when -ly is added.
https://www.reddit.com/r/animation/ comments/2hcu4v/heres_an_old_man_walk_ cycle_i_made_what_do_you/

The suffix -ly can also answer the question how often.

Example: weekly

10
fearless is composed of fear ( the
rootword) + -less ( means without),
so fearless means without fear
https://www.tasmeemme.com/store-items/comic-cute-brave-kid-in-superhero-costume- with-star-red-mask-and-developing-

believable is composed of believe

(the rootword) + -able( means
having the power or skill) so
believable means something that
can be believed

.

Here is a list of words with the given suffixes. Read them aloud.

-ful -ly -less -able

powerful eagerly tasteless advisable
colorful gladly endless available
peaceful happily careless believable
faithful yearly fearless inflammable
prayerful monthly restless perishable
useful daily helpless breakable

Guided Practice

11
Add -ly, -ful, -less or -able to these words. Then write the
completed word on the blanks. Pictures will serve as your clue.

1. bright + _____ = _________ . The sun shines

________ today!
https://www.uihere.com/free-graphics/ sunshine-landscape-drawing-colorful-cartoon- style-ai-eps-file-252853

The correct suffix is -ly. And the completed word is brightly. Bright
is an adjective and when -ly is added it becomes an adverb of
manner. So the suffix -ly change the meaning and the form of the
word.

2. color + _____ = ___________ The rainbow is

__________.
https://gallery.yopriceville.com/Free- Clipart-Pictures/Rainbows-PNG/RainbowwithCloudsPNGClipart#.X1gymdIzaUl

The correct suffix is -ful, and the completed word is colorful.

Indeed the suffix -ful changes the meaning of the word. Colorful
means full of color.

3. care + _____= ____ .The boy is ____. He reads

while walking on the street.

https://www.freepik.com/premium- vector/careless-businessman_1420264.htm

means without care.

12
4. comfort + ______ = __________ The girl sits on a
_______ sofa.
https://www.freepik.com/premium-vector/ young-girl-working-home-sitting-couch-laptop-her-lap-with- living-room-interior-as-background_7454726.htm

The missing suffix is -able, and the completed word is comfortable.

Comfort is a noun, when able is added it becomes an adjective.
Again it changes the meaning and form of the word.

5. month + _______ = __________ We _______

visit our cousins in Cavite, before the
pandemic comes.
https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/ cute-2020-calendar-template_6209318.htm

The correct suffix is -ly.And the completed word is monthly.

The suffix -ly here answers the question how often. The word month
is a noun when -ly is added it becomes an adverb of time. So the
suffix changes the form and meaning of the word.
