page. Eachis datedby relyingon criteriasuch as publisher'splate
number, publisher'saddress, copyright and registrationdate, a
watermark if it is foundon the paperof the book andothertypesof
evidence.1
A craftguild calledthe Companyof Stationerswas establishedin
Londonas a Brotherhoodin 1403andcharteredin 1557.Its members
were booksellers, printers, bookbindersand dealers in writing
materials.Sincethe copyrightact of 1842,most printedworkswere
registeredat Stationers'Hall until the act was abolishedin 1911?
NeighbourandTysonobservedthatalthoughthemajorityof publishers
before 1842sent theirpublicationsto Stationers'Hall for registration
immediately,there were otherswho sent their new publicationsin
batches;sometimesmusic and books publishedyears before were
included?The gapis evidentwhen a printeddateon a sourcediffers
fromthe date of entryat Stationers'Hall.
I culledthefollowinglistof publications froma manuscript transcript
of the musicalentriesmade for William Hawes (1785-1846), the
Londonmusicpublisherandmusician.Themanuscript is entitled'AList
of MusicEnteredat Stationers' Hall 1789-1819'andis preservedat the
NewberryLibraryin Chicago(CaseMS 6A 36 Vault).Accordingto
Alec HyattKing,copiesof the majorityof musicandbooksenteredat
Stationers'Hall were depositedin the BritishMuseum. Hawes'list
includes4951 entriesof popularsongs,ariasfromcurrentoperasand

instrumentalmusic primarilyfor the piano or harpsichordas well as a
number of vocal and instrumentaltreatises and tutors. However, the
compilerof Hawe's list was selective since severalpublicationsfrom this
period were not included. Nevertheless, the following list includes 72
entries, 33 of which correct previouslyrecorded dates, 13 of which are
unrecordedsources.The instrumentsand subjectmatterof these books
are as follows:
