Elements of Fiction

There are six major elements of fiction namely character, plot, point of view, setting, style, and theme.

1. Character- is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story. They perform the actions and dialogues
in the story.
Types of characters
a. Major Characters- the most important characters in the story.
Protagonist- The main character in which the whole story revolves.
Antagonist- This causes conflict for the protagonist.
b. Minor Characters- not as important as the major characters, but still play a large part in the story.
They may impact the decisions of the protagonist or the antagonist.
2. Plot –- the major events that move the action in a narrative. It is the sequence of major events in a story,
usually in a cause-effect relation.

Plots are typically made up of five main elements:

1. Exposition: At the beginning of the story, characters, setting, and the main conflict are typically
introduced.
2. Rising Action: The main character is in crisis and events leading up to facing the conflict begin to unfold.
The story becomes complicated.
3. Climax: At the peak of the story, a major event occurs in which the main character faces a major enemy,
fear, challenge, or other source of conflict. The most action, drama, change, and excitement occurs here.
4. Falling Action: The story begins to slow down and work towards its end, tying up loose ends.
5. Resolution/Denoument: Also known as the denouement, the resolution is like a concluding paragraph that
resolves any remaining issues and ends the story.

Example 1

“Kaitlin wants to buy a puppy. She goes to the pound and begins looking through the cages for her future
pet. At the end of the hallway, she sees a small, sweet brown dog with a white spot on its nose. At that
instant, she knows she wants to adopt him. After he receives shots and a medical check, she and the dog,
Berkley, go home together.”

● In this example, the exposition introduces us to Kaitlin and her conflict. She wants a puppy but does
not have one. The rising action occurs as she enters the pound and begins looking. The climax is when
she sees the dog of her dreams and decides to adopt him. The falling action consists of a quick medical
check before the resolution, or ending, when Kaitlin and Berkley happily head home.

3. Point of View -- the vantage point from which a narrative is told. A narrative is typically told from a first-
person or third-person point of view.

First-person perspective- the author tells the story through a character who refers to himself or herself as "I."

Second person perspective- second person, the narrator is speaking to YOU.

Third –person narratives come in two types: omniscient and limited. An author taking an omniscient point of
view assumes the vantage point of an all-knowing narrator able not only to recount the action thoroughly and
reliably but also to enter the mind of any character in the work or any time in order to reveal his or her
thoughts, feelings, and beliefs directly to the reader. An author using the limited point of view recounts the
story through the eyes of a single character (or occasionally more than one, but not all or the narrator would
be an omniscient narrator).

4. Setting –- That combination of place, historical time, and social milieu that provides the general
background for the characters and plot of a literary work. The general setting of a work may differ from
the specific setting of an individual scene or event.

The setting may also include the environment of the story, which can be made up of the physical location,
climate, weather, or social and cultural surroundings.

Example 1

A simple example to understand setting is the Disney movie “Cinderella.” The setting starts out as

Time: Cinderella as a young girl, long ago in the past

Place: Cinderella’s home in a kingdom far away

After her father dies, the time aspect of setting changes, skipping roughly ten years into the future.
Understanding this change in time helps in keeping up with the story.

5. Style -- The author’s type of diction (choice of words), syntax (arrangement of words), and other linguistic
features of a work.It is the way words take on identity on the page (Buhisan and Sayseng 2016). They
also added that the writer’s style focuses on the following:
● Writer’s choice of diction or the choice of words used by the writer.
● Writer’s sentence style or the use of different lengths and type of sentences.
● Writer’s paragraph style

6. Theme(s) -- The central and dominating idea (or ideas) in a literary work. The term also indicates a
message or moral implicit in any work of art.

Major theme-idea that a writer repeats in his literary work, making it the most significant idea in the work.

Minor theme- refers to an idea that appears in a work briefly, giving way to another minor theme.

Example:

“When the astronaut landed on the moon, he felt loneliness. Thinking there was no one else, he became a
little forlorned, though the view of Earth was stunningly beautiful.” (Theme of lonesomeness)
“The space travelers were travelling to the moon, when their spaceship suddenly ran out of fuel. They were
all frightened to learn that they wouldn’t be able to return to Earth, and could only land on the moon.”
(Theme of fear)

Merging reality and the fiction world

In the movie, Space Jam 2, there was a scene where Dom, Lebron’s son made his own character. The picture in
the left below shows how a certain character from the real world (i.e., snake) is being merged with a fictional
character (i.e., basketball player from a game). On the other hand, the picture from the right shows the new
character being created out of the characters being combined together.

HARVEST TIME!

Instruction: Read the story of ‘Dead Stars’ by Paz Marquez Benitez and discuss the theme and the plot. Limit
your answer into three sentences only per category.

Exposition Here, the main character of the story, Alfredo Salazar, is introduced. He
remembered everything about his first love, Esperanza, and the woman he
unexpectedly fell madly in love with before their wedding.

Rising Action And because of unexpected love, Alfredo hides the truth from Esperanza: he
has a new love for a new girl. While Alfredo fully recognizes Julia, he finds
out that she is also going back to his town, so without a second thought,
Alfredo admits his true feelings to Julia because of the fear he feels.

Climax Unexpected chance. He was about to meet Julia, but Julia found out what he
was hiding from her: that he was about to get married and that he had a fiance
before they met. But after they talked about the issue of the three of them, on
his way home, he heard Esperanza talking to his best friend about loyalty and
faithfulness. At that time, he thought of telling Esperanza everything. But
Esperanza herself admitted that she already knew Alfredo's sin in hooking up
with Julia, so Esperanza talked to Alfredo about wanting to separate and not
continue the marriage. But their marriage continued to falter, and Alfredo
finally gave up on everything that happened.

Falling Action After 8 years, he had the opportunity to visit Julia because they were close to
where he worked in Julia's town. At that time, he decided to date Julia because

he found out she was still single. He thought of having a new life with Julia,
but just one day he realized a lot about his feelings for Julia. A lot has changed,
and he can't get back to the way he first felt when he saw Julia.
Resolution
Alfredo should have been loyal and had such consistency in his feelings and
love for Esperanza that no other woman would fade it just because they were
attractive.

What is the theme of the story?

From my point of view while reading the whole story, Loyalty and contented is what I’ve learned to this story
because of alfredo’s mistakes and faults he should’ve been loyal to his first love and never cheat with another
woman. I think the theme of the story is love and loyalty.
