Musical Analysis
Kookaburra consists of 4 phrases, the first two phrases contain the same rhythmic
pattern with a different melody and the last two phrases contrast this. Rhythmically the
song contains more complex rhythm in a duple meter. The range spans an octave which
allows for introduction to new solfege syllables and to explore the range of the voice. The
song contains all solfege syllables except for re, allowing for new and specific “ear
training” with newer syllables.
2. Educational
Kookaburra allows for a number of musical concepts to be taught, although I
think it can be specifically useful for teaching 16th notes in different contexts while
contrasted with rhythmic values that have already been learned. Rhythmic patterns are
repeated with different melodies allowing for pattern recognition. It also allows for
lessons on form in a little bit of a longer song.
3. Other
There can be connections to learning about the kookaburra and the loud and soft
sounds of animals, the song also originates from Australia and connections to geography
can be made.
