Multitool generator for Mothership and other Scifi Horror

Roleplaying games WORK IN PROGRESS
By Laiska Saunatonttu

”Your character has stumbled upon a multitool while dodging a horror from
SPACE”
Inspired by mistranslation of ”utility knife” in Mothership RPG. I highly
appreciate possible feedback

Multitools are inferior to actual, specialized tools, performing complex

tasks with them should take several times more effort and time than using
”proper” tool. Multitool gadgets might also be more fragile and if
powered with gas/electricity might use the power fast.
What counts as ”complex task”, ”fragile” or ”fast” is up to Warden’s
judgement.
Modern multitools have variety of functions, so it’s only reasonable to
assume that future multitools have even wilder variety of functions, some
of them even useful!

noted

4-5 Wood, feels nice on hand
6 Exotic wood, expensive and rich finish
7-8 Aluminun, durable and stylish
9 Black bioplastic. This seems… familiar
10 10 Titanium. Justs like aluminum, but better
Extra: Naming the tool
Warden can name the tool based on the type, gadgets it has and
possibly finish. Names starting with manufacturer’s name and
ending with nonsensical number or letter combination are highly
encouraged.
After the tool has been named, it becomes normal item in the
universe and can be possibly found from what ever place that sells
tools and gadgets.

”Beyond comparison” multitool is unique and priceless.

Example
Rolled as instructed in this booklet, work in progress.
Tool name
Viskarsi mountaineer
special 300X

Tool type Gadgets

Blue collar special: Miniature fishing rod
Ice axe Screw driver, exotic
Timer/stopwatch
Finish FULL SIZE ICE AXE
Red plastic coating

Extra

Strong construction

Well, that’s an interesting device, I didn’t expect that. Player

could use the normal ice axe head as climbing device, break stuff
with either pick or hammer head, weapon, tinker with more unusual
devices with exotic screwdriver (or just bash them in), use
fishing rod as expected or reel something up, lower something etc
and take time while doing it, or take. Creative and/or desperate
player could likely invent more uses for it.
Nothing game breaking, but definitely usefull, just as intended.

BONUS for wardens

”I search the body” aka what else did the tool’s last owner
have. D12 (I know you have one! It comes with the basic RPG
dice sets!) Or Warden makes it all up, the more bizarre and
unlikely, the better.
Flare gun with squashed barrel (makeshift rocket
1 thruster), matchbook (8 matchsticks), string,
rubber-band and a chocolate bar
Bottle of olive oil, old news paper, cotton wool,
2 soccer ball, 100 grams of higly flammable synthetic
narcotics and a plastic spatula
Coin with ”BOOM!” on heads and ”1 Finnish mark” on
tails (disguised handgrenade), book of drinking
3 games, ”Mullet is A-OK” patch, handwritten
manifesto against artificial intelligence in cars
and two steamed sausages (still hot)
hot water bottle, soda, vinegar, chili powder
4
(extra hot!)
Jumper cables, silver candle stick, heavy duty
5
rubber gloves, car battery
Leather belt with sharpened belt buckle, lasso,
6 bottle of strong whiskey, bag of pine nuts and a
cowboy hat
Aviator style sun glasses, military field watch,
7 leather jacket, work boots, duct tape and 2D10
paperclips
Map of the area, fire crackers, duct tape, camera
8
with strap and external timer
Shield made from a car door, bent car keys, hair
9 spray, ”Samurai Manufacturing” M3000 microprosessor
with a memory core (Wait, what?)
Tie (polyester, black), jerrycan of gasoline,
10
matches, revolver (empty), black suit
Inflating raft (don’t pull the string), two signal
11 flares (single use flare gun), pulse rifle (full
magazine)
Patched hazard suit (2 armor points, hydration
12 reclamation busted), Jury rigged flamethrower (2
shots, critical failure sets user on fire)

(How the HELL did I manage to make this crap 5 pages long?)

I left most of the gadgets without stats on purpose, they are mainly
tools, not weapons. Also, what the players can achieve with the gadgets
should be somewhat believable, sabotaging space ship’s atmospheric system
with pointy sticks and adjustable wrench is quite plausible, ramming the
pointy stick through the ship’s armored hull or cutting minibuss sized
tentacle cluster in half with rotary tool sized angle grinder… not so
much.

This whole project is a small minigame for both players and wardens to
solve the puzzle of ”what am I supposed to do with this thing?”.

I hope you have fun with it.
