In 2002, two babies born almost at the same time were accidentally exchanged in the Spanish
city of Logroño, in La Rioja region. The incident happened in San Millán hospital, which is now
closed. The two daughters were taken to the incubator area because they weighed only 1.5 kilos.
After their recovery, a hospital worker apparently confused them and the babies were given to the
wrong families.
Today, one of the baby girls, who is a 19-year-old woman, is asking for a €3 million compensation
in damages from health authorities in La Rioja. Nobody suspected what had happened until the
girl took a DNA test which proved that she had grown up with the wrong family. After a rigorous
investigation, the authorities finally identified her biological parents, who had taken care of a non-
biological daughter. The case, revealed by the online regional newspaper LaRioja.com in
September 2021, has revolutionized the lives of both families —they just couldn’t believe it.
Now the biological parents of the victim have offered to welcome their biological daughter into
their family. Alicia Redondo, lawyer of the biological parents, has expressed her clients’ firm
decision “to accept as an integral part of the family a daughter who, for unfortunate reasons, has
lived apart from us”. But this decision doesn’t affect the non-biological daughter that the couple
has raised for nearly two decades. “At the same time, they are going to defend the position of a
daughter who has been part of the family since she was born”, concluded Alicia.
