 The Catholic understanding of the human person begins with the belief that each person is made in the Christian Concept of the Human person,
image of God (Genesis 1:26-27).
 The human person as imago Dei (Image of God)
 The key to Christian moral life is the dignity of the human person.

What does it mean to be a creation in the image of God?

 Fundamentally good: In creating man and woman God had given them a special participation in his own
divine life in holiness and justice (Compendium of the CCC 72) What does it mean to be a creation in
 A material being and a spiritual being: The human person is a being at once corporeal and spiritual. In the image of God?

 A relational being – belonging with others: …the human person has a communal dimension as an
essential component of his nature and vocation. (Compendium of the CCC 401) Being created in the image of God means

 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUMAN PERSONS

God created us: By being created in God’s image, we
A. Open, Relational assume the following characteristics
“No man is an island…” as human persons.
Being a person means being BY, WITH, and FOR others.

B. Rational, Conscious (The students are asked to assess

We image the Creator’s knowing & loving acts. themselves and provide proof or evidence
Self-awareness. Conscious of our outgoing acts.
for each characteristic)
Free-will
This is the basis of our moral life.

C. Embodied Spirit
Unity between our body & soul
We are God’s Sacrament
Created by God
Dignified by Christ’s incarnation, redemption, resurrection.
Temple of the Holy Spirit.
D. Sinful but able to be forgiven: Sin is present in human history. The reality of sin can be understood
clearly only in the light of divine revelation and above all in the light of Christ the Saviour of all. Where sin
abounded, he made grace to abound all the more. (Compendium of the CCC 73)
E. Historical Reality
We develop as persons in discernible stages…
This baby would not have been alive if God had not given it life. For this reason, we bow our knees
before God our Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth comes forth.
In exercising freedom, we form ourselves… WALK towards true freedom. Improve ourselves.
We are not static… We have a goal, a journey, a race to finish, a task given by God…
To HOPE is to march back on our feet, even to crawl to do God’s will… with God’s GRACE.
F. Unique yet Fundamentally Equal
Despite physical, intellectual, social, & moral differences – we are EQUAL.
The basis of our equality is rooted on the truths of the dignity of human persons.

S.Y. 2021-2022

•The key to Christian moral life is our dignity as human persons grounded on the truth that each person is made
in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). The human person, as a moral agent has the capacity to use all his
faculties and strengths to become loving persons, in the fullness of life-with-others-in-community before God.

DISCERN: REFLECT AND SHARE

 How does our dignity as a human person relate to moral life?
