INTRODUCTION
Moral obligation is often misunderstood as something that spoils freedom. Some think that if one is morally
obliged, he/she is not free. They do not like to accept the idea that there are certain acts that they ought to do.
Sadly, there are even persons who are not aware of why they ought to perform their obligation.

DEEPEN: LESSON PROPER

Presentation of the Lesson:
TEACHING-LEARNING PLAN FOR SYNCHRONOUS SESSION
S.Y. 2021-2022

OUR LIFE:

What is moral obligation? How would you define moral

obligation?
As humans created by God with intellect and free will, we are aware of the moral value of our actions. Thus,
MORAL OBLIGATION refers to a duty which one owes, and which he/she ought to perform. It tells us that we
MUST, SHOULD, and OUGHT to do certain acts

Why should I do my moral obligation?

Two possible grounds for moral obligation:
1) the goodness of the effects of an action, and
2) the goodness of the act itself. How do we experience moral
obligation?
MORAL OBLIGATIONS is seen in this situation:
Example:
• A person is given a task to study for the examination of the next day. In this case, the person can only
pass his/her exam if he/she will study, thus making him/her responsible to perform the task.

How do we judge the morality of the act? What should you consider in fulfilling
In judging the morality of the human act whether it is GOOD or EVIL, one must consider the three elements: your moral obligation?
OBJECT, INTENTION, and the CIRCUMSTANCE of the act.
ASSESS STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING
 OBJECT- the nature of the act itself.
Let us take for example Robinhood ‘s act
 INTENTION- the purpose of the act of stealing in order to help his fellowmen
to alleviate their poor condition.
 CIRCUMSTANCE- a fact or condition connected with or relevant to an event or action.
 Therefore, a morally good act requires the goodness of the object, of the intention, and the circumstances What is the object? Is it good?
together. An evil end corrupts the action, even if the object is good in itself (such as praying and fasting What is the intention? Is it good?
"in order to be seen by men“ or stealing in order to help others). What is the circumstance? Is it good?

The object is stealing, which is evil

The intention is good
The circumstance is good since it

How can we determine if the object of the act is good or evil or how can we know that the moral alleviates the poor condition of his

people whom he robbed.
SOURCES OF MORAL OBLIGATION: Therefore, the morality of the act is EVIL,
1. Moral Principles since one of the elements is evil.
2. Law-based Moral Obligations
3. Promise-based Moral Obligations

• The key to moral obligation then, is that human person is:

 capable of reflecting on the situation;
 forming intentions towards good; and
 perform the action.

• People who have the moral responsibility to perform a good action are called MORAL AGENTS.

DETERMINE: LESSON SYNTHESIS

• MORAL OBLIGATION helps us to see how we are supposed to obey and do that which is good. If we go
against a basic value, we deny our universal call to love. Only in saying YES to do what is good can we be truly
FREE and HAPPY.
As a faithful Christian, moral obligation is
