Why did the Quraish oppose the prophet

The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) belonged to Banu Hashim which is the branch of the most powerful
tribe of Arabia, the Quraysh. This tribe enjoyed special immunity against raids on their trade
caravans which the other tribes did not .The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) preached his message
at a time when the people of Mecca were enjoying an easy going life with an abundance of
affluence. As Islam spread in Mecca, the ruling tribes began to oppose Muhammad (PBUH)
preaching and his condemnation of idolatry. The Quraysh tribe controlled the Kaaba and drew
their religious and political power from its polytheistic shrines, so they began to persecute the
Muslims and many of Muhammad's followers became martyrs. The Quraysh were fearful for the
loss of income from the pagan pilgrims, who would travel throughout the year to the city for
religious purposes, because they relied heavily on the wealth they gathered through the pilgrims’
constant visitation to the sacred house. The Quraysh were the powerful tribe of Mecca that
rejected and persecuted the prophet Muhammad and his followers for preaching the message of
Islam. They had their own belief system of polytheism and idolatry, and they did not want to
abandon their gods and traditions for the monotheism of Islam. They feared losing their status
and position as the leaders and custodians of the Kaaba, the sacred shrine that attracted many
pilgrims and traders to Mecca. They also feared losing their income and wealth from the trade
and commerce that they controlled in Arabia and beyond. They felt threatened by the influence
and popularity of Muhammad among the youth and the poor of Mecca, who embraced Islam in
large numbers. They were proud of their ancestry and lineage, and they did not like the idea of
equality and brotherhood that Islam preached among all people. They also envied the prophet for
being chosen from among the Banu Hashim, one of the sub-tribes of the Quraysh, instead of
someone from their own tribe. The. Quraysh opposed the prophet and his followers in various
ways, such as mocking, bribing, torturing, boycotting, and warring against them. The opposition
of Quraysh lasted for about 13 years, from the beginning of Muhammad's prophethood until his
conquest of Mecca. During this time, Muhammad faced many hardships and challenges, but he
also received many revelations and miracles from God to support him. He also gained many allies
and converts from other tribes and regions. Eventually, he was able to overcome the opposition
of Quraysh and establish Islam as the dominant religion in Arabia. They thought it would cut them
off financially and they would become poor. Therefore, they tried to resist the message of Islam
in order to secure their wealthy and economic status. As the ranks of Muhammad’s followers
swelled, he became a threat to the local tribes and the rulers of the city, whose wealth rested
upon the Ka’aba, the focal point of Makkan religious life, which Muhammad threatened to
overthrow. Economically, the Quraysh held a dominant position in Mecca due to their
custodianship of the Kaaba, a revered sanctuary central to trade and pilgrimage. This gave them
substantial economic power, as pilgrims and traders from across the Arabian Peninsula flocked
to Mecca. When the Prophet Muhammad began preaching and advocated for the rejection of the
numerous idols housed in the Kaaba, this posed a significant economic challenge to the Quraysh.
They considered it a financial benefit from the pilgrims’ offerings and the trade associated with
the Kaaba’s significance. Thus, the Prophet’s message threatened their established economic
interests. The opposition of quraysh lasted about 13 years from the beginning of Muhammad
