LIFE CYCLE OF
A BUTTERFLY
STAGE 1:
BUTTERFLY EGGS
A butterfly starts life as a very small,
round egg. The egg shape depends
on the type of butterfly that laid the
egg.
Butterfly eggs are usually laid on the
leaves of plants.
STAGE 2: LARVAE
The eggs will hatch into tiny larvae
called caterpillars. Caterpillars eat a lot
of leaves so that they can grow. They
eat non-stop to gain more energy for
growth.
Their body covering is hard
(exoskeleton) and does not stretch or
grow so the caterpillars must moult
several times to shed their old skin in
order to grow bigger .
STAGE 3: PUPA
As soon as the caterpillar reached
their full length, it will form a pupa.
During this stage, the pupa does
not eat and move. A great
transformation is happening inside
the pupa !
STAGE 4: ADULT
This transformation is known as
metamorphosis and the adult
butterfly will emerge from the pupa
after some time. At first, the wings
would be folded and soft. The
butterfly will start pumping blood
into its new wings to get them
working. Once its wings are strong
enough, the butterfly will fly away
in search of food.
LIFE CYCLE OF
A COCKROACH
STAGE 1:
COCKROACH EGGS
The cockroach life cycle starts with eggs.
Generally shaped like a kidney bean or
purse, the egg case is either carried by the
mother or placed in a protected location
until hatching. The female deposits the egg
capsule in a protected location preferably
near a food source.
STAGE 2: NYMPH
Newly hatched cockroaches come out
from eggs as nymphs. During this stage,
the insects grow by shedding their skin
multiple times until reaching adulthood,
a process known as moulting. After
each moulting, the nymph grows in size
and length..
Nymphs look alike to adults except that
they do not have wings yet.
STAGE 3: ADULT
When a cockroach is at the adult
stage, it stops moulting and
develops a pair of wings.
Once they reached adult stage,
they will look for a mate to
reproduce. An adult female can lay
300 - 400 eggs in its lifetime.
LIFE CYCLE OF
A FROG
STAGE 1:
FROG EGGS
Frogs are amphibians, which means
that they can live in water or on land.
They go through several stages of
development before they become
adult frogs and during its young
stage, they live only in water.A frog
begins life as a fertilized egg. A
female frog lays a lot of eggs at one
time in a pond. The eggs float on
water in a jelly cluster. The eggs will
soon hatch into tadpoles!
STAGE 2: YOUNG
When the tadpole hatches, it doesn’t
have any legs! It has gills that allow it to
breathe underwater. The tadpole swims,
eats plants and algae from the water,
and grows for several weeks.During this
time, the tadpole starts to develop lungs
so it will be able to breathe out of the
water when it becomes a frog. The
tadpole starts to grow two front legs and
its long tail becomes shorter and shorter.
The tadpole uses the nutrients stored in
its tail as food, so until its tail is
completely gone, it doesn’t need
anything else to eat! Then just a little
stub of its tail is left, and the tadpole is a
young frog. It hops right out of the water
and onto dry land for the first time! The
frog is still very small.. .
STAGE 3: ADULT
The adult frog breathes with lungs
and has no tail. The frog will mostly
live on land and eats insects and
worms. Later these new frogs will
mate and the whole life cycle
begins again.
