Activity 1: Hear Me!

Directions: Make a sounding box using the materials listed below by following the given
procedures.

Materials
 Rubber bands
 Box
 Sticks

Procedure:

1. Place the assorted rubber bands from thinnest to thickest. In the absence of varied
thickness of rubber bands, you may use identical bands but vary by increasing the
number of the four rubber bands around the box.

2. Pluck or abruptly pull and release each rubber band and listen to the sound it
produces.
3. Describe the sound produced and record your findings on Table 2.

4. Place the bamboo or wood stick across the box (on its edge) to form a bridge.

5. Pluck or abruptly pull and release each rubber band again.


6. Record your observations in table 2 and compare the sound it produces.
Guide Questions:

1. What happen after you pluck or pull the rubber band? Does it produce any sound?

2. Does increasing the number of rubber band affect the pitch produced in the
sounding box? How?

3. What happen to the pitch of the sound after you insert the stick?

4. Compare the sound produced using 4 rubber bands with and without the
bridge/stick in place.
