Introduction:
Every day we listen to a variety of sounds from our
surroundings. Different objects produces different types
of sound. Some sounds are pleasant to us and some are
unpleasant. Identify two pleasant and two unpleasant
sounds from the pictures given below.
Definition: Sound is one of the form of energy which causes
sensation of hearing. Sound plays an important role in our lives.
It helps us to communicate with one another.
In the music room of our school we hear the sounds produced
by musical instrument like flute, tabla, harmonium, etc.

Production of sound: Sound is produced by the
vibration of particles present in objects. The to and fro,
rapid movement of an object about its fixed point is
called a vibration. Eg-Pull a stretched rubber band
slightly then leave it. This set the rubber band into
vibration and a sound can be heard.
Activity 13.1
1) Take a metal plate (or pan).
2) Hang it at a convenient place in such a way
that it does not touch any wall.
3) Now strike it with a stick. Do you hear a
sound?
4) Touch the plate or pan gently with your finger.
Do you feel the vibrations? (Fig. 13.2)
5) Again strike the plate with the stick and hold it
tightly with your hands immediately after
striking. Do you still hear the sound?
6) Touch the plate after it stops producing sound.
Can you feel the vibration now?
Activity 13.2
1) Take a rubber band. Put it around the longer side of
a pencil box.(Fig 13.3)
2) Insert two pencils between the box and the
stretched rubber.
3) Now, pluck the rubber band somewhere in the
middle.
4) Do you hear any sound? Does the band vibrate?
