TOPIC- Analysis of L’hospital rule for the indeterminate
form.
CONTENT-

• L'Hôpital's Rule is a mathematical technique used to

evaluate limits of indeterminate forms. The rule is named
after the French mathematician Guillaume de l'Hôpital.
The indeterminate forms it addresses are typically 0/0 or
±∞/±∞.
• L'Hôpital's Rule is typically applied when you encounter
indeterminate forms of the type 0/0 or ±∞/±∞
• L'Hôpital's Rule is a valuable tool in calculus that helps
mathematicians and scientists analyze and evaluate limits
that result in indeterminate forms, specifically the forms
0/0 or ±∞/±∞
THEOREM PROOF OF L’HOSPITAL

• Theorem- Suppose f(x) and g(x) are differentiable on an

open invertal containing c (except possibly at c), and g’(x)
not equals to 0 for all x in that invertal, except possibly at
c. If lim x-c f(x) = lim x-c g(x)=0 then lim x-c f(x)\g(x)=lim
x-c f’(x)\g’(x)
• Proof- Indeterminate Form: Assume lim x-c f(x)=lim x-c
g(x)=0. Applying, L’hospital rule- Since 0\0 is an
indeterminate form. lim x-c f(x)/g(x)= lim x-c f’(x)/g’(x).
• This concise proof captures the essence of L'Hôpital's
Rule, highlighting the key step of replacing the original
ratio with the ratio of derivatives to resolve the
COROLLARIES OF L’HOSPITAL RULE

• L'Hôpital's Rule has several corollaries, which are

consequences or special cases derived from the main
theorem. Here are a couple of common corollaries:
• Corollary- Suppose f(x) and g(x) are differentiable on an
open invertal containing c (except possibly at c), and g’(x)
not equals to 0 for all x in that invertal, except possibly at
c. If the lim x-c f(x)/g(x) is an indeterminate form, such as
0/0, infinite/infinite and both lim x-c f(x) and lim x-c g(x)
exist(finite or infinite), then lim x-c f(x)/g(x) = lim x-c
f’(x)/g’(x).
GEOMETRICAL INTERPRETATION

1) If you have f(x)/g(x) with an indeterminate form 0/0, it

means that both the numerator and denominator are
approaching zero ,Geometrically, this suggests that you are
looking at a point on the graph where the curve approaches
the x-axis and the tangent line at that point is parallel to the
x-axis.
In summary, L'Hôpital's Rule provides a way to analyze the
behavior of functions at points where they approach zero or
infinity by examining the slopes of tangent lines at those
points. If the slopes have a limit, then the original function
has a limit at that point as well.
REAL LIFE APPLICATION

• Physics and Engineering: Motion and Velocity: L'Hôpital's

Rule can be applied to problems involving motion and
velocity. For instance, if you have a particle moving along
a curve, the speed of the particle at a particular point can
be found by taking the derivative of the position function
with respect to time and applying L'Hôpital's Rule if
necessary.
• Drug Dosage: In pharmacology, L'Hôpital's Rule can be
applied to optimize drug dosage. The rate at which a drug
is eliminated from the body can be expressed
mathematically, and L'Hôpital's Rule can help find the
