Statement 1: If p, then q. Statement 2: If q, then r. Statement 3: Conclusion: If p, then r.

Major premise - All roses are flowers.

Minor premise - This is a rose.

Conclusion - I'm holding a flower.

Other examples: two concluding sentence

• Statement 1: If it is Wednesday, I have school.

•Statement 2: If I have school, I have my math class.

•The conclusion that we can draw from the above two statements is

•Major premise: All books from that store are new.

•Minor premise: These books are from that store.

•Conclusion: Therefore, these books are new.

•If ∠A is supplementary to ∠B

Modus ponens:

It follows the pattern: If P, then Q. P is true, therefore Q must be true.

Example: If it is raining (P), then the ground is wet (Q).

It is raining (P), so the ground is wet (Q).

Conditional Statement:

If it is sunny outside (P), then John will go for a walk (Q).

It is sunny outside (P is true).

Conclusion: Therefore, John will go for a walk (Q is true).

Explanation: In this case, the condition "it is sunny outside" (P)

implies that John will go for a walk (Q).

When the condition is met (P is true), the consequent action follows (Q is true).

Conditional Statement:

If you study hard for the exam (P), then you will get a good grade (Q).

You studied hard for the exam (P is true).

Conclusion: Therefore, you will get a good grade (Q is true).

Modus tolens

•If P, then Q. (Conditional premise)

•Not Q. (Negation of the consequent)

•Therefore, Not P. (Negation of the antecedent)

• Therefore 3 is not x *

•If a number is divisible by 6 (P), then it is divisible by both 2 and 3 (Q).

•The number is not divisible by 2 and 3 (Not Q is true).

•Conclusion: Therefore, the number is not divisible by 6 (Not P is true).

*If n is a prime number, then n cannot be divisible by 2.

•n is divisible by 2.

•Therefore,n is not a prime number.
