A Reflection On My Values Speech
By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have
already accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself
better for the next big speech as well as to further improve my public speaking skills.
Now that I look back at the recording of my presentation, I clearly saw strengths that
were shown, but there were also weaknesses that I revealed, diminishing the overall
powerful effect that my speechshould have gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy s TED talk
called Your body languageshapes who you are , I learned more about body language and
what I should ve done when I presented my Values Speech. Throughout my reflection, I
will discuss my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as pacing and eye
contact as well as the limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my
sentences, and then I will finish off my reflection with the levels of confidence and body
language I portrayed.
First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my
Values Speech such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite
the strengths that were seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences
abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my presentation. As I watched the
recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was very well
executed. I didn t speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good because my
classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that, but I also
provided eye contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not
need to read my note cards as much. Of course, with strengths, there were also
weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of phrases because of my anxiety
and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly, leaving a poor execution. I
realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and mess up mid way through, I
would end the sentence with words that wouldn t be as clear. Now knowing my
weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next upcoming speech by
practicing my speeches with more word choices when I say it verbally, allowing myself
to become more aware of the variety of

Freshman Mentor Program
Peer mentoring is one of a range of peer support frameworks used in schools where
students provide support to other students. Peer mentoring provides an alternative avenue
of support by offering support from the peer group rather than adults. Research has
shown that students respond well to peer mentors and feel a connection with someone
that is closer to their age and more closely connected to the experience of high school.
The mentors serve in a dichotomous role as older more experienced source of support
that one can turn to for advice and guidance, while simultaneously serving as a friend and
peer that one can relax and have fun with. This is a role that many times adult mentors
cannot fulfill, which makes peer mentoring unique and sometimes... Show more content

First, only one program was studied. It is difficult to know whether a similar program
would yield similar results. Second, the study was completed during the first semester of
the program. If the same research questions were examined during the second semester,
the results might vary because of the additional time spent between mentors and mentees
as well as the additional topics discussed. The first semester lessons and activities are
about building relationships. Third, only the mentors were studied. Finally, only a small
sample of the mentors in the program were the focus of this research. A more
comprehensive sample size will most likely yield varying results.
Delimitations
This study is limited to the freshman mentor program at one high school in a 30 high
school district located in Maryland. Data was collected from a representative group of
mentors. Interviews were limited to discussion of the role of the mentor in working with
the freshmen mentees. Although many high schools have freshmen mentor programs,
each school develops a unique program to fit the needs of the students feeding into their
school. Data was collected from a small representative group of mentors and they were all
Charles Berger s Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Review

Communication is a vast subject that incompasses quite a number of theories. In

conducting this theoretical review I chose to focus on the theory of Uncertainty
Reduction. This theory was developed in 1975 by American professor Charles Berger
and His associate Richard Calabrese. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is based on
communications impact on the social interaction between individuals that do not know
each other and how that first interaction is used to gain information to reduce uncertainty
amongst each other in order to be able to communicate freely and develop a relationship.
Uncertainty Reduction theory states that, the primary goal of a person when initializing
an interaction is to increase their ability to predict and explain the other individuals
behavioral choices. In other words people seek to gain information about an individual in
order to feel comfortable enough to start communicating. An individual does this by
gaining information about the other person through asking questions, using visual cues,
body language, and even overhearing conversations. Anything that gives them a peek or
an idea into who that person is any bit of information that helps reduce the uncertainty
between individuals is key in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has had a huge impact on the study of interpersonal communication and many other
communication fields. Yet it does have its criticisms. Many state that the assumptions
made by the theory are too broad making it easy to be disproven. An example is that
many scholars do not contribute uncertainty reduction the main motivating factor in
initiating conversation. Also the demographics of the people observed in the studying of
this theory was very limited, mostly only white middle class individuals, making it
difficult to apply to all interactions between all individuals. These factors all contribute in
weakening the theory in the eyes of most scholars. (communication studies,
