ACTIVITY 3 Travels of Rizal Learning Experiences

1. Madrid, Spain  Rizal acknowledges that everything in the world
has a purpose and fulfills a role in the grand drama
of creation. His stay in Madrid was a crucial period
of growth and enlightenment, leading him to
embrace his mission as a catalyst for change and
social justice
2. Paris, France  Rizal went to Paris and Germany with a specific
purpose: to specialize in ophthalmology.
 He explored the vibrant city of Paris, its culture,
art, and intellectual circles. His interactions with
bohemian intellectuals, artists, and poets in the
Latin Quarter broadened his perspective.
3. Heidelberg, Germany  Rizal continued his habit of keen observation,
noting cultural differences, societal issues, and the
European way of life.
 His experiences in Heidelberg contributed to his
evolving nationalist sentiments and deepened his
understanding of colonial injustices.
4. Wilhemsfeld, Germany  Rizal corresponded with Karl Ullmer, a Protestant
pastor in Wilhelmsfeld.
 Rizal was serious about learning “correct” German
rather than the local dialect spoken in
Wilhelmsfeld.
 Rizal wrote the final chapters of his novel, “Noli
Me Tangere”, from April to June 1886.
5. Berlin, Germany  He pursued further studies in ophthalmology at
the Charité Hospital.
 Completion of Noli Me Tangere
 Rizal joined the Berlin Society for Anthropology,
Ethnology, and Pre-History.
 Rizal’s time in Berlin reinforced his experiences
fueled his commitment to fighting for justice and
independence. his love for the Philippines.
6. Vienna, Austria  Vienna, known for its rich cultural heritage,
exposed Rizal to art, music, and history. The city’s
museums, architecture, and intellectual atmosphere
left a lasting impact on him.
 Rizal’s time in Vienna reinforced his commitment
to fighting colonial injustices. He observed the
disparities between colonizers and the colonized,
fueling his nationalist sentiments.
7. Rome  His exposure to Roman art, architecture, and
culture broadened his understanding of European
civilization.
 Rizal visited the Basilica of Santa Maria
Maggiore, a significant church in Rome. The
spiritual atmosphere and historical context of this
basilica may have prompted deep reflections.
8. Hongkong  Rizal learned about the material wealth and
landholdings of the Dominicans from Inocencio
Laurel.
 His self-imposed exile allowed him to reflect on
his role as a patriot and advocate for Philippine
independence.
9. Japan  Rizal observed the Japanese people’s behavior
and lifestyle.
 Learned Nihonggo to easily blend in.
 Rizal’s fascination with Japanese culture extended
beyond stereotypes.
10. London  Rizal engaged with influential Orientalists in
Europe during his time in London.
 He wrote “Specimens of Tagal Folklore,” “Two
Eastern Fables,” and annotations of de Morga’s
“Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.” His literary
output reflected his commitment to preserving
Philippine culture and history.
 He was exposed to diverse ideas, cultures, and
historical perspectives. His interactions with
scholars and intellectuals broadened his worldview.
