Activity No.

Rizal in Spain -1882-1885 finishing the 4th year of the medical course in the University of Santo Tomas,
Rizal decided to complete his studies in Spain. Aside from completing his studies in Spain, Rizal has his secret
mission was to observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs, industries and commerce, and
government and laws of the European nations in order to prepare himself in the mighty task of liberating his
oppressed people from Spanish. He departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection by the Spanish
authorities and the friars that’s why Rizal used the name of his cousin from Biñan which is Jose Mercado.

Some of the people he met in Spain was Paterno Brothers friends of Rizal who shared his ideas. They often held
meeting and celebrations in their home. Don Pablo Ortega y Rey a rich mestizo who was a former mayor of Manila.
Befriended Rizal due to him being in love with her daughter. Consuelo Ortega y Rey one of the many lovers of Rizal.
Very beautiful and educated and further described in Rizal’s poem dedicated to her. Senor Rose a bookstore owner
whom Rizal frequently buys from. Suzanne Jacoby another lover of Rizal while in Spain. Beautiful and pretty as
described by him, confessed her love as he left Spain for France. Marcelo H. Del Pilar an illustrator and a leading
figure of the propaganda movement. Founder of the famous La Solidaridad and a respected member of the
Freemasons. And lastly is Mariano Ponce another famous figure in the propaganda movement. Also, the co –
founder of La Solidaridad together with Marcelo del Pilar. those are just some of the people he knew who he trusted
while he was on the spain

In Paris to Berlin- 1885-1887 Rizal went there in order to specialize in ophthalmology, Rizal chose this
branch of medicine because he wanted to cure his mother’s eye ailment. Rizal gave editor an article on the
Caroline’s Question, then a controversial issue for publication. Rizal was living in Paris where he sojourned for about
four months. Rizal was enchanted by Berlin because of its scientific atmosphere and the absence of race prejudice.

While he was in there Rizal became a member of the Anthropological Society, the Ethnological Society, and the
Geographical Society of Berlin, upon the recommendation of Dr. Jagor and Dr. Meyer. Tagalische Verkunst. He was
also become busy in writing the scholarly paper in German which he read before the society, this paper was
published by the society in the same year, and elicited favorable comments from all scientific quarters

Some of the people that Rizal met in Paris to Berlin was Señor Eusebio Corominas the editor of the newspaper La
Publicidad and made a crayon sketch of Don Miguel Morayta, owner of La Publicidad and a stamen, Dr. Rudolf
Virchow introduced to Rizal by Dr. Jagor; famous German anthropologist, Dr. Hans Virchow son of Dr. Rudolf
Virchow, professor of Descriptive Anatomy, Dr. W. Joest noted German geographer and also, Dr. Ernest Schweigger
famous German ophthalmologist where Rizal worked.

In Europe-1887 Rizal decided to leave the country not just to complete his medical studies in Europe.
Hidden purposes for his voyage to make a name for himself in the realm of journalism to observe and study
European society and to prepare himself for the task of liberating the Filipinos from Spanish. He also came here to
write letters to foreign friends and attend parties, he was there to study and, eventually, campaign for reforms. His
stay exposed him to different cultures and practices good and bad.

While he was in Europe Rizal wrote from Munich to Friedrich son of Pastor Ullmer, there’s a lot of things that happen
while he was in Europe Noli was finally finished and ready for printing, it became available with charged the lowest
rate, that is, 300 pesos for 2,00 copies of the novel and the Noli Me Tangere came off the press. He also earned
honors token of his appreciation and gratitude, gave Viola the galley proofs of the Noli carefully rolled around the pen
that he used in writing it and a complimentary copy.

Some of the people he met was Dr. Carlos Czepelak the renowned scientist of Europe, Professor Robert Klutschak
an eminent naturalist. And also Dr. Willkomm a professor of natural history in the University of Prague.

Fist Homecoming in the Philippines- 1887 Rizal was determined to return to the Philippines for the following
reasons, to operate on his mother’s eyes, to serve his people who had long been oppressed by Spanish tyrants, to
find out for himself how Noli and his other writings were affecting Filipinos and Spaniards in the Philippines and, to
inquire why Leonor Rivera remained silent.
While he is in the Philippine Rizal wrote to his father, announcing his homecoming, he boarded the steamer
Djemnah, the same streamer which brought him to Europe 5 years ago, he transferred to another steamer,
Haiphong, which was Manila-bounded, and he also established a medical clinic. His first patient was his mother, who
was almost blind, he opened a gymnasium for young folks, where he introduced European sports.

Some people he met Gov. Gen. Emilio Terrero aliberal Gov. Gen. who defended Rizal from the friars because of the
controversy caused by his novel; Noli Me Tangere and advised him to leave the Philippines. And Don Jose Luis
Taviel de Andrade a very good friend of Rizal. He became his lawyer at the same time his bodyguard.

Hongkong and Macao-1888 Rizal left Manila for Hong Kong, Rizal stayed while in Hong Kong to witnessed
a Catholic possession, in which the devotees were dressed in blue and purple dresses and were carrying unlighted
candles. Some people he met Jose Maria Basa a Filipino resident in hong Kong. He also toured Rizal in Macau.
Balbino Mauricio Another Filipino resident whom Rizal befriended while in Hong Kong. Manuel Yriate also a Filipino
resident in Hong Kong. He is the son of the alcalde mayor in Laguna. Jose Slanz de Varanda a Spaniard who served
as a secretary of Gov. Gen. Terrero and became a spy by shadowing Rizal’s movements in Hong Kong. And
Josephine Bracken another well-known lover of Rizal. She almost became her wife had he was not afraid of
commitment.

United State -1888 while Rizal was in US, he had good and bad impressions of the United States. The good
impressions were the material progress of the country as shown in the great cities, huge farms, flourishing
industries and busy factories, the drive and energy of the American people, the natural beauty of the land (4) the high
standard of living, the opportunities for better life of poor immigrants. One bad impression Rizal had of America was
the lack of racial equality which America is the land par excellence of freedom but only for the whites.

Some people he met Dr. Otto Becker a well-known ophthalmologist. Rizal worked for him as an assistant.
Dr. Karl Ullmer a kind protestant pastor. Rizal stayed at his home and became best of friends and became his
admirer. Dr. Adolf B. Meyer he is the Director of the Anthropological Museum. Also befriended by Rizal.
And Dr. Feodor Jagor A celebrated scientist-traveller.

London-1888 He visit London to improve his knowledge of the English language, to study, and also because
he thinks that London is the safe place for him to carry on the fight against Spanish tyranny.
While he is in London Rizal which published in Barcelona under his nom-de-plume Dimas Alang in order to defense
his novel. In La Vision del Fray Rodriguez, he demonstrated two things, his profound knowledge of re ligion and his
biting satire. Person he met in London is Dr Reinhold Rost, editor of Trubner’s Record, a journal devoted to Asian
studies, request Rizal to contribute some articles. In response to his request, the latter prepared two articles.

Second Sojourn in Paris-1889 For a short time Rizal lived in the house of his friend Valentin Ventura. This
was where he polished the annotated edition of Morga’s book. He was able to find a room and lived with two other
Filipinos, Captain Justo Trinidad and Jose Albert. In spite of a joyous lifestyle in Paris, Rizal kept himself busy.
Continue researching. Spent most of his time at the National Library. Rizal used most of his time in the reading room
of the Bibliotheque Nationale, checking up his historical annotations on Morga’s book. But after he livee in Paris he
decide to leave because of the cost of living in Paris was very high because of the Universal Exposition and the gay
social life of the city hampered his lite rarely works, especially the writing of his second novel, El Filibusterismo.
People he met Dr. Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera, a physician by vocation and philologist by avocation, and Dr. Felix
Pardo de Tavera, also physician by vocation and an artist and sculptor by avocation.

Belgium Brussel and Biaritzz-1889-1890 when he moved to Brussels accompanied by Jose Albert. They
lived in a modest boarding house on 38 Rue Philippe Champagne, which was run by two Jacoby sisters. Later Albert,
left the city and was replaced by Jose Alejandro, an engineering student.
While he was in his moment of despair, Rizal had bad dreams during the nights in Brussels when he was restless
because he was always thinking of his unhappy family in Calamba. He feared that he would not live long. He was not
afraid to die, but he wanted to finish his second novel before he went to his grave. In the face of the sufferings which
afflicted his family, Rizal planned to go home. He could not stay in Brussels writing a book while his parents,
relatives, and friends in the distant Philippines were persecuted.
People he was met Jose Ma. Panganiban, his talented co-worker in the Propaganda Movement, Antonio Luna was
bitter because of his frustrated romance with Nellie Boustead and one of his good friends. And also, Wenceslao E.
Retana, his bitter enemy of the pen, a talented Spanish scholar.

Ophthalmic surgeon in Hongkong- Nov 1891- June 1892 Rizal established his residence, where he also
opened his medical clinic and to earn a living for himself and for his family, and also to practiced medicine.
While he is in Hongkong he enjoyed his self-playing chess, and contributed articles to this newspaper The Hong
Kong Telegraph a British daily newspaper whose editor is Mr. Frazier Smith, a friend of Rizal. Rizal also wrote
Una Visita a la Victoria Gaol, an account of his visit to the colonial prison of Hong Kong. In this article, Rizal
contrasted the cruel Spanish prison system with the modern and more humane British prison system. And he met Dr.
Lorenzo P. Marques- a Portuguese physician, who became Rizal’s friend and admirer, who helped him to build up a
wide clientele. In recognition of Rizal’s skill as an ophthalmic surgeon, he turned over to him many of his eye cases

Second Homecoming in the Philippines and the La Liga Filipina -1892 Arrival in manila with sister Lucia
wife of late Mariano Herbosa, he went to Malacañang Palace to seek audience with the Spanish
governor general, General Eulogio Despujol, Conde de Caspe. He boarded a train in Tutuban Station and
visited his friends in Malolos Bulacan, San Fernando Pampanga, Tarlac and Bacolor Pampanga, then after
that he returned by train to Manila on the next day. On the other day, interview with Governor General
Despujol, Rizal attended a meeting with patriots at the home of the Chinese Filipino. He explained the
objectives of the Liga Filipina, a civic league of Filipinos, which he desired to e stablish and its role in the
socio -economic life of the people.

Liga members has their duties of the are as follows fist is to obey the orders of the Supreme Council
second to help in recruiting new members, third to keep in strictest secrecy the decisions of the Liga
authorities, fourth to have symbolic name which he cannot change until he becomes pre s ident of his
council. Fifth to report to the fiscal anything that he may hear which affect the Liga, sixth to behave well
as be fits a good Filipino, and last to help fellow members in all ways
