EXTINGUISHING

1. General

The function of extinguishing system is to extinguish the fire in these areas:

-- The engine nacelle
-- The APU compartment
-- The flight compartment
-- The passenger compartment
-- The cargo compartment
-- The lavatory
There is also an automatic fire extinguishing function when the aircraft is forced to land.

2. System Description

The extinguishing system consists of these:

-- The fixed fire extinguishing system
-- The portable fire extinguishing system
-- The waste container fire extinguishing system.

3. System Operation

A. Fixed Fire Extinguishing System

The fixed fire extinguishing system is used to extinguish the fire that starts in the engine
nacelle and APU compartment.
The fixed fire extinguishing system includes:
-- A fixed fire extinguisher
-- A pneumatic solenoid valve
-- A combined check valve
-- A delivery duct of fire extinguishing agent
Fixed Fire Extinguisher
Two 8 L (2.113 US gal) fixed fire extinguishers are installed on the fire extinguisher
support behind the partition of Frame 19 in L.H. engine nacelle. They are filled with 1211
fire extinguishing agent which is boosted with dry nitrogen. a pressure gauge and a
protection membrane are arranged on the lock head of each fire extinguisher, which are
respectively used to indicate the pressure of the fire extinguishers and prevent the

MA60 AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL (PART I SDS)

explosion of the bodies of the fire extinguishers. An electric squib releasing the fire
extinguishing agent after the operation by the pilot is also arranged on the lock head.
B. Portable Fire Extinguishing System
The portable fire extinguishing system consists of the portable fire extinguishers, which is
used to extinguish the fire that starts in the flight compartment, the passenger
compartment ,the cargo compartment and Lavatory.
There are three portable fire extinguishers.
The portable fire extinguishers are filled with 1211 fire extinguishing agent.
C. The Waste Container Fire Extinguishing System
A fire extinguisher is installed in the waste container in the Lavatory
The waste container fire extinguisher is filled with 1301 fire extinguishing agent.
D. Automatic Fire Extinguishing After an Forced-Landing
The forced landing limit switch of the fire extinguishing system is installed on the skin, in
the lower parts of Frames 14 to15 and Frames 30 to 31.

4. Controls and Indicators

A. Engine nacelle Fire Extinguishing

The fire extinguishing can operate two times in the engine nacelle.
When a fire starts in an engine nacelle, a fire signal is received. You must push the
"FIRST FIRE EXT” (first fire extinguishing) button or the "STBY FIRE EXT” (standby fire
extinguishing) button on the fire extinguishing control panel. This will start the procedure
to extinguish the fire manually.
After the fire extinguishing switch is set to "ON", the igniter is energized. And this causes
the explosion of the electrical squibs on the lock heads of Extinguisher I or II. Because of
the spring force and the pressure of the fire extinguishing agent in the fire extinguisher,
the valve in the lock head of the fire extinguisher opens. This causes the fire
extinguishing agent to flow as follows
- Along the fire extinguishing duct,
- Through the combined check valve, the pneumatic solenoid valve and the injection
pipe.
Then the fire extinguishing agent goes to the fire area.
B. APU Compartment Fire Extinguishing
The fire extinguishing can operate one time in the APU compartment. When there is a fire
in the APU compartment, you must push the “APU FIRE EXT (APU fire extinguishing)”
button on the fire extinguishing control panel. You can also operate the APU fire
extinguishing button on the APU ground-control panel (Ref. to Fig. 001). The operation of
the buttons will cause the explosion of the electrical squib of Extinguisher II which will
release the fire extinguishing agent. This will flow to the APU compartment to extinguish
the fire.

MA60 AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL (PART I SDS)

C. Fire Extinguishing System in the flight compartment, Passenger compartment, Cargo

Compartment and Lavatory
When the smoke detection system senses that the concentration of smoke in the flight
compartment, Passenger compartment, Cargo Compartment and Lavatory is more than
the limit, it sends an alarm signal, or when the crew members find that there is a fire in
those areas, they use the portable fire extinguisher (installed in the flight compartment,
FWD or in the AFT passenger compartment) to extinguish the fire.
When the temperature of the lavatory becomes 76℃ to 79℃ (168.8℉ to 174.2℉), the
waste container fire extinguisher will automatically release the fire extinguishing agent.
This will cause the fire to extinguish
D. Automatic Fire Extinguishing After an Forced-Landing
Ref. to Fig. 002.
When the aircraft cannot lower the landing gear, it must land in emergency conditions. If
the cowling(12) of the FWD or AFT forced landing limit switch is damaged, the movement
of the stopper (11) makes the head (3) push the limit switch. This will connect the fire
extinguishing control circuit and will cause:
--The left and right pneumatic solenoid valves to fully open
--Extinguishers I and II to release the extinguishing agent at the same time.
The fire extinguishing agent will go into the left and right nacelles and the APU
compartment through the pipe, to extinguish the fire immediately .
E. Operations of the fire extinguishing system and other related systems
When in operation, the fire extinguishing system is related to other systems, so it is
necessary to have a synchronized procedure. For example: when there is a fire in the
engine nacelle, independently of the system operation, these precautions are necessary:
-- Pull the power control rod back to "FI (flight idle)".
-- Pull the state rod back to "FEATHER (feather)" and then pull it back to "CUT OFF
(cut off fuel)" to stop the engine.
-- Set the fire-resistant switch of the fuel system to "OFF".
-- Disconnect the AC generator.
-- Disconnect the DC generator;
-- Stop the bleed.
-- Close the hydraulic fluid shutoff valve.
