Similartitires and differences?
Similarities between ISO 9001 and ISO 22000:
• Both have a risk-based approach.
• Based on the 7 principles of ISO 9001 and the 10 clauses of the High-Level
Structure (HLS).
• Apply the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle.
• ISO 9001 serves as a foundation for implementing ISO 22000.
Differences between ISO 9001 and ISO 22000:
ISO 9001:
• Purpose: ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems helps businesses meet
customer needs by improving the efficiency of their operations.
• Provides general guidance requirements, allowing businesses to operate and
control processes within the QMS effectively.
ISO 22000:
• Focuses on ensuring that food businesses can comprehensively control all
potential hazards to food safety throughout every stage of the production,
business, service, and product life cycle.
• In addition to the ISO 9001 elements, ISO 22000 includes 4 additional factors:
interactive communication, system management, prerequisite programs,
HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles.
• Concentrates on providing a standardized framework for all activities within the
food chain to ensure that all food safety standards are well met.
• The layout of ISO 22000 adds three criteria: operation, performance evaluation,
improvement.
• Implements the PDCA cycle at two levels."
Should organizations in the food supply chain obtain 9001:2015 or 22000:2018
certification? Why?
Organizations in the food supply chain need to achieve ISO 22000:2018 certification.
This standard is designed specifically to address the challenges and risks associated with
food safety, ensuring the production of safe and high-quality food products. While ISO
9001:2015 is a valuable standard for general quality management, ISO 22000:2018
provides a specialized and comprehensive framework for the food industry, including
aspects such as hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP).

There is a reality that when a food business aims to focus on complying with food safety
requirements, it often finds itself in the situation where the products are unsellable
because they do not meet consumer expectations and demands.
As a result, the food business cannot compete with other competitors beyond the safety
aspect of the product.

Consumer requirements and food safety requirements are not the same.

To address this issue, building and implementing an integrated management model

based on ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 standards is suitable for businesses in the food
industry.
