Introduction

Emergency is an unforeseen and often dangerous situation requiring

prompt action, typically arising from accidents, natural disasters, medical crises,
or other urgent circumstances. Strengthening awareness for the possible
disaster will make them aware and also give them knowledge about the things
they need to do when disaster strikes. It necessitates immediate attention and
decisive measures to mitigate potential harm, ensure safety, and address the
pressing needs of individuals or communities involved. It can help students face
those challenges; the ability to respond faster and effectively becomes
paramount.

Disasters are not natural but can be managed by reducing hazards,

exposure, and vulnerability. Addressing underlying drivers like poor economic
and urban development choices, environmental degradation, poverty, inequality,
and climate change can reduce risk, mitigate climate change impacts, and
maintain development sustainability. Reducing these components is crucial for
preventing losses and alleviating disaster impacts. Disaster awareness denotes
the extent of knowledge about disaster risks, and the factors that lead to
disasters influence the actions that could be taken individually or collectively to
address exposure and vulnerability to hazards, while disaster preparedness
denotes the measures that are taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of
disasters. Despite the increase in awareness, however, many universities and
schools still lack adequate planning, response, and mitigation strategies (Tanner,
2015).

Emergency response strategies must be adaptive, considering the

evolving nature of threats. Collaborative efforts at local, national, and
international levels are essential to address the complexity of modern
emergencies. Public schools instilled vital knowledge in preparation for coming
disasters. This implies that schools follow the implementation of different safety
preparations and conditions schools ready for any disaster. The Philippine
Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
also play a vital role in developing learners to be disaster-aware and disaster-
ready. The role of educational institutions is very significant to create
environmentally aware and eco-conscious learners (Rogayan & Nebrida, 2019).

Various stakeholders should collaborate in exerting more effort to enhance
students’ environmental literacy in the Philippines. Every year, schools conduct
disaster drills such as earthquake and fire response drills for the students to be
aware and prepared. Such practice of the schools helps develop awareness and
understanding about the students’ response during disasters.
Emergency awareness refers to being aware of potential threats or
hazards and understanding how to respond appropriately. This involves staying
informed about potential risks, being aware of emergency procedures, and
knowing the resources available for assistance. Awareness enhances one’s
ability to react quickly and efficiently in emergency situations, potentially
minimizing harm and ensuring personal safety. Awareness for future
emergencies involves staying informed about potential risks and developing a
proactive mindset to prepare for and respond to unforeseen situations. Being
aware allows for timely and effective responses in the face of emergencies.

The major aim of giving information to students is to make them aware of

emergencies and enable quick recognition of potential threats, allowing for a
faster and more effective response to emergencies. Understanding potential
hazards allows for proactive measures, reducing the risk of injury, damage, or
loss during emergencies. Awareness helps individuals make informed decisions
to ensure their own safety and the safety of those around them in critical
situations. Knowing about potential emergencies allows for better allocation of
resources, ensuring that necessary assistance and support are provided where
needed. Informed individuals are less likely to panic during emergencies,
contributing to a calmer and more organized response, which can be crucial for
effective crisis management. Awareness promotes adaptability, enabling people
to adjust to changing circumstances and make informed decisions based on the
evolving situation. Overall, being aware of emergencies empowers individuals
and communities to mitigate risks, respond effectively, and contribute to a safer
and more resilient environment.

Students have long been among those most emotionally and physically
affected by natural or man-made disasters, yet universities and colleges continue
to lack effective disaster response and mitigation practices. Disasters cause
deaths and serious disruptions in society, which call for the global community to
take drastic steps to address and reduce the impacts of these inevitable
calamities. That is why the government, through the Philippine Disaster Risk
Reduction Management Act of 2010, requires the integration of disaster risk

reduction in the school curriculum to strengthen the awareness and practice of
personnel and students on calamity preparedness. Likewise, it sought to
establish a difference in awareness and practice on disaster preparedness
relative to sex, residence, and grade level and the relationship between
awareness and practice.

The Project SAFE (Strengthening Awareness for Future Emergencies)

aims to help and also to be well-informed and equipped to respond effectively to
unexpected situations. This information aids in minimizing panic, guiding
appropriate actions, and ultimately saving lives. Through information
emergencies, students will gain accurate and new knowledge that will help them
if ever emergencies happen. With this project, it is expected that students can
adapt new information for them to be aware when it comes to emergencies. This
will be applied to all students for them to be aware for all time.

Information for future emergencies helps the students to be aware at all

times. Additionally, providing information for possible emergencies serves to
enhance preparedness, minimize risks, and facilitate effective responses when
unexpected situations arise. It empowers students and communities to make
informed decisions, fostering resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges.
Students identify the right thing to do when it comes to emergencies. The
information will help them be aware of emergencies.

Objectives of the Study:

1. To determine the features of the tri-fold brochure that affects the level of
awareness on the safety protocols and guidelines.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the tri-fold brochure on improving the
level of awareness on the safety protocols and guidelines.
3. To suggest what areas of the tri-fold brochure may be improved for
information dissemination.
Scope and Delimitations

This study will primarily focus on strengthening awareness for future

emergencies at Alangilan Senior High School during the school year 2023-2024.

The respondents of this project will be the Alangilan Senior High School
students, both from grade 11 and grade 12, among the Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS), and Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) strands.

However, this study is delimited to the teachers at Alangilan Senior High School.
The school’s staff and administrators are not also included in conducting this
study.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be significant on information dissemination

regarding the safety protocols on an emergency. Specifically, this project may be
beneficial to the following:

Students. This project may help senior high school students become educated
on the different safety protocols for future emergencies.
Teachers. This project may help educators impart additional knowledges for
students to have enough knowledge regarding the different safety protocols for
future emergencies.
SDRRM Organization. This project may help the SDRRM organization on giving
additional awareness for the students.
Future Researchers. The results of this project may give future researchers a
solid foundation of data for their research related to equipping students enough
knowledges for safety protocols. It may also help them to develop much more
detailed conclusions.

Definition of Terms
For clarification and better understanding, the following terms were defined
conceptually and operationally:

Disaster. It is a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or

destruction. It is a natural phenomenon and the main reason why disaster risk
reduction and management are being implemented at every school to lessen the
6

Humanities and Social Sciences
damage caused by it.
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. It is the application of disaster risk
reduction policies and strategies to prevent new disaster risk, reduce existing
disaster risk and manage residual risk, contributing to the strengthening of
resilience and reduction of disaster losses. It corresponds to the practices of
Alangilan Senior High School to lessen the effects of a disaster and to help
students be disaster-resilient when a disaster happens.
Emergency. It is a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring
immediate actions. It is an event where as it can be prevented with the use of
safety protocols.
Safety Protocols. It is a document that includes the safety requirements
developed in the risk assessment. It is used to ensure that everyone knows and
understand the hazards, risks and protective measures for future emergencies.
