questions.

For questions 24 – 30 circle A, B or C.

Summer sports camp

Nikki, Grace and Jack stayed in a summer sports camp for schoolchildren by a
lake in Maine, USA.

Nikki
I enjoyed all the sports, except running. I was already quite good at waterskiing
and at swimming, so I was sad when they said I was too young to swim across
the lake with the over-15 swimmers. I also played golf. I was new to that and it
was fun. I’ll definitely ask my parents to let me go again next year.

Grace
I was away from my parents for the first time. The first day was hard but after
that I didn’t think about them! I tried cross-country running but I enjoyed
waterskiing and swimming more. I really improved at both of those. There were
lights on the basketball and tennis courts so we could play there after dark,
which was great.

Jack
This was my second time at the camp. Last summer, I played tennis day and
night but this time I did more running instead. We ran round the lake every
morning and by the end of my stay, I could do the distance six minutes more
quickly than at the beginning. Another good thing was swimming in some races
against people from another camp – we came first!

Susanna Brightman
Susanna Brightman is a young Australian basketball
player. She is 195 cm tall, and very fast and strong.
Some people say she may become the best player in the
world one day. As well as playing for her own country,
she plays for a team called Boston Hawks in America.

Susanna was born on 15th June 1992. Her mother and father were both basketball players
and when she was just 2 weeks old she was already travelling around the country with
them while they played basketball. When she was still very young, Susanna told her
parents she wanted to play for Australia. At the age of 16, she played for her country for
the first time.

But things have not always been easy. When Susanna was 12, she toured Australia for the
first time. One day, the team she was playing for lost an important match because
Susanna didn’t want to play. Susanna’s parents were angry with her but told her that she
didn’t have to play basketball if she didn’t want to. She needed to think hard about her
future. Luckily, Susanna decided she wanted to be a basketball player after all, and since
then she has worked very hard to become an even better player.

My favourite hobby is gardening. No other hobby can give me more

pleasure than it. I grew up watching my grandmother grow seasonal vegetables and flowers
in the empty plot of land we had. I remember planting my first roses. When the flowers are
in full bloom, I feel a thrill of joy in my mind and take pride in my creative labour. While
working in the garden, not only do I spend my time in a better way, but I also improve my
health.

Leon

I started my interest in coin collecting when I was about eleven years

old. My father showed me a piece of paper that had an imprint of a coin he traced over with
a pencil. I was fascinated and interested, so I started doing my research, asking people
everywhere what this coin was. A few months later, I found out that it was a morgan dollar. I
wanted it, I had to have it, but I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price of it.

Rory

From all the hobbies I started in my childhood, chess is the only hobby that
stayed with me. I fell in love with chess when I was seven years old. My cousin offered to
teach me the game when the heavy rain trapped us indoors for most of his two-day visit. I
accepted his offer to show courtesy. For me, chess is more than just a game of skill - it is a
philosophy. Chess teaches that persistence pays off in the end.
