Three museums
Eureka!
Eureka! is a complete hands-on experience, which means that visitors can actually pick up any object in the
museum. It’s a great way for young visitors to learn about the world, the body, how things work and move.
And when you buy an entry ticket, it allows you to come back as many times as you want for a whole year
for no extra cost. As Eureka! is right next to Halifax train station, it’s very easy to get to from all over the
country.
Museum of Museums
Every time you visit the Museum of Museums, you’ll be able to see something different. And that’s because
the things you see there are actually lent by other museums around the country. The museum always has
lots of different vehicles, from ice-cream vans and old motorbikes to the different kinds of public transport
people used to get to work many years ago. You can find out about all this and lots more.
Cinema Museum
Ronald Grant, who opened the Cinema Museum in the 1960s, travelled round the country and bought things
from cinemas which were closing down. This included old film posters and wooden cinema seating. At the
museum, you can now see these and much more, including the uniforms that cinema staff once had to
wear.
Please let us know by phone or email if you’d like to come. We’ll be happy to see you, but we need to
arrange a guide, as it’s only possible to visit the museum on an organized tour.

Questions 14 – 18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

My hobby – skateboarding
14-year-old Ellie Briggs talks about skateboarding

Skateboarding wasn’t popular where I lived when I was younger, which is

strange, because there was a good local skateboard shop. But one day, I
was walking home from school with my friends, and a boy went past us on
his skateboard. I loved the way he moved on the board, and decided to try
the sport myself.

Of course, I was very bad at skateboarding when I started, but there are
many ways to learn. My cousin says he learned from going to the skatepark and seeing what
everyone was doing, but it was the videos that skateboarders post on the internet that were most
useful for me.

Even the best skateboarders fall off their boards. And when you’re learning a new jump, you fall off
lots of times. What’s important, when it happens, is that you don’t hurt yourself. That’s something
other people can show you how to do.

I love skateboarding. My parents are happy about me doing it, too, because I spend lots of time
outdoors and take part in competitions. The best thing for me is all the friends I have at the
skatepark. I’ve met some really nice people there.

Last week, I saw a man going to work on an electric skateboard. I was interested to know more, so
I found some online reviews. People say they’re simple to ride and really useful, but I couldn’t
believe the price. They’ll have to get a lot cheaper before I get one!
14 How did Ellie become interested in skateboarding?

A She had friends who liked skateboarding.

B She lived near a shop which sold skateboards.

C She saw someone skateboarding in the street.

15 Ellie got better at skateboarding by

A watching online videos.

B getting help from a family member.

C copying what people at the skatepark did.

16 What does Ellie say about falling off your board?

A You have to stop falling to become really good.

B You need to learn to fall in a safe way.

C You fall less if you have a good board.

17 What does Ellie like most about skateboarding?

A being outside

B making friends

C doing competitions

18 What does Ellie think of electric skateboards?

A They’re easy to use.

B They’re OK for adults.

C They’re too expensive.
